ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

Introduction
 In recent years, one of the most important goals in the automotive industry has been to
offer passengers the highest level of safety, comfort, and efficiency by partially or
completely removing driving duties from humans.

It has been observed that using advanced automation like electronic stability control,
adaptive cruise control, accidents on roads can be controlled and traffic conditions can
be improved.

 Using such advanced techniques efforts are being made to improve the fuel economy
driving comfort and safety to passengers and driver.
Adaptive Cruise Control
 Adaptive cruise control (ACC) is a type of automation in which the speed of the car is
controlled based on the position of the vehicle moving ahead.

The driver has to set the maximum speed and the radar senses the speed and conditions
ahead and controls the vehicle speed thus avoiding any accidents.

ACC is now almost always paired with a pre-crash system that alerts you and often begins
braking.
Literature Survey
Many safety systems in vehicles now-a-days provide safety after meeting with an accident. They
include:

Enhanced Accident Response system (EARS), Anti-lock Braking System(ABS), Pressure sensing
system (Airbags).

Enhanced response system is a system in Daimler Chrysler vehicles in which EARS turns on internal
lighting, unlocks doors and shuts off fuel when airbags deploy.

An antilock brake system (ABS) prevents a vehicle‘s wheels from locking during panic braking, which
allows the driver to maintain greater steering control.

Pressure Sensing System (Airbags)- Depending on the speed at impact and the
stiffness of the object struck, front air bags inflate to prevent occupants from
hitting the dashboard, steering wheel, and windshield. Side air bags reduce the
risk that occupants will hit the door or objects that crash through it.

Many researchers have published papers for remedies to road accidents and
comfort to the driver. The system is collectively termed as Adaptive Cruise
Control (ACC).
Problem Statement
The studies made have revealed that 60% of front-end crashes would not occur if the driver could
react a split second earlier.

In order to alleviate to this reaction time, research has demonstrated that Adaptive Cruise Control or
ACC significantly aids driver comfort by reducing driving stress and fatigue, which allows better
concentration when driving.
Elements of ACC system
 The elements of ACC system are:-
 Fusion sensors
 Microcontrollers
 LCD display
 GSM modem
 GPS system
Fusion Sensors
Fusion sensor is a combination of sensors and processors. The fusion sensor
consists of the following components.
1-Millimeter-wave radar
2-Stereo camera
3-Image processor
4-Fusion processor
5- Headway Control Unit
Fusion Sensors
Working of ACC
Sensors are devices used to measure distance from the sensor to the target
object. The output of sensor is given to the controller.
The signals from the Stereo camera and Image processor are also received by
the microprocessor.
The signals are processed and further sent to the headway control unit.
In the headway control unit, throttle position and brakes are controlled
depending on the signals sent by the microprocessor.
ACC System
Implementation of ACC
The implementation of ACC is being implemented in today’s vehicles.
But the system used now-a-days is not fool-proof. The system set is only used to maintain the
set speed.
But it does not sense the vehicles ahead, their speed, and also the distance. That work is to be
done by the driver himself.
The system today is sensing the person sleeping and triggers alarm but it is not changing the
speed as per the vehicles moving in front.
This developing system is being used in vehicles like Volkswagen Passat, Skoda Octavia, BMW
vehicles, etc.
 This is the most important system in Self Driving Vehicles being tested by Google, Tesla.
Future Aspect of ACC
The more advanced and developed system is Co-operative ACC system.
 In CACC mode, the preceding vehicles can communicate actively with the following vehicles so
that their speed can be coordinated with each other.
 Under CACC, both the leading and following vehicles are electronically “tied” to a virtual
reference vehicle, as well as to each other.
