Gradients and Equations

The document discusses analyzing geometric problems involving linear equations and graphs, including finding distances between points, gradients of lines, midpoints of line segments, and equations of lines given points and gradients. It provides examples of tasks involving finding gradients from equations, checking if points lie on lines, and finding equations of lines in general and y-intercept forms. The document links the content to modeling real world situations involving mountain roads, access ramps, and demand and supply curves.

Finding the gradient from an equation
When the equation of the line is written in the gradient-intercept
form, we can find the gradient by looking at the coefficient of x
(some equations will need rearranging)

Find the gradient of the line 2x + 5y – 17 = 0

Finding the gradient from an equation
Find the gradient of the line with the equation:

y = 3 – 2x 3x + y – 7 = 0 Find the gradient of the
line ax + by + c = 0

2x – 7y = 8
y= Hence find the gradients:

4x + 11y – 9 = 0 5x + 4y – 10 = 0
y=
7x – 9y = 63 -x + 3y – 2 = 0

-2x + y = -3
Checking to see if a point lies on a line
A point lies on a line if its coordinates satisfy the equation of the
line.

Does (3, -2) lie on the line with the equation 5x – 2y = 20?
