Contemporary Art
- is the art that springs out of the present-day
events and passions of the society.

- is the newest form of art, amusing people

from the middle to the late 20th century up to
this very minute.
• Authorities in the arts place the emergence of
contemporary art sometimes during the start
of postmodernism in the West, around the late
1970’s.
• This was the time when artists reacted to the
previous art period called modernism, whose
idea of using a pure, simplified, and stream-
lined form and style was fundamental in
creating something new at that time.
• It functions in a global society that is culturally
diverse and technology-oriented.
• It provides instances for people to reflect and
respond to contemporary social concerns and
issues pertinent to themselves and to the
world.
• It is a combination of mixed styles, materials
techniques, and concepts that challenges
tradition.
Contemporary Art vs. Modern Art
• Modern Art referred to as “Traditional”
compared to Contemporary Art.
Contemporary Art is the art of the present,
which is continuously in process and in flux.
• The distinction of modern art and
contemporary art could also be a matter of
perception and reception depending on the
context.
Integrative Art
• This “crossbreeding” in the contemporary
scene has resulted in a hybrid art is called
integrative art.
• This art forms are interactive and multi-
disciplinary in nature, that is, consisting of
ideas and practices from different
branches of learning – the outcome being
the unity of separate areas of learning.
Characteristics of Contemporary Arts
• Contemporary art is not confined to the
museum.
• They are also found in galleries, art
schools, side streets, and public spaces
like the train or bus stations, shopping
centers or parks.
• The practice of selling paintings has also
change in contemporary art.
• Many contemporary artists are self-
taught and did not have formal
education.
• Access to different kinds of materials that
were originally used only for
construction, for example, has expanded
the choice of artists.
• Cebu artist Mona Alcudia – uses paper to produce solid
forms.
• The problem of weight has also been
solved by technology, which has given
artists enough flexibility and liberty to
combine art materials with found
objects.
• In architecture, different shapes and
forms has emerged as a result of the use
of different materials.
• It is also not surprising to find
contemp0orary artists who employ the
help of fabricators, carpenters,
electricians, or welders in “constructing”
their artworks.
• This is practiced by conceptual artists
who use principles of physics and the
technology of construction to form their
artworks.
• Some gather “found objects” and put these
together in a certain way that expresses their
statement regarding an issue or disturbing
reality that they are reaching to.
• Originality is not an issue in contemporary art.
An artist can get another artist’s work and add
to it, redesign or interpret it using other
materials.
• The essential to contemporary artists
therefore, is the process of art-making. It
is the experience for example, of dipping
one’s hands into a pail of paint and
making markings on a flat surface that
matters to the contemporary artists.
• It is not how much money they make out
of the final artwork.
• It is the movement in dance that matters,
or the plot that is communicated to the
film viewers that is important.
• Given these characteristic, it can be said
that contemporary art is statement that
an artist makes about life, thoughts,
ideas, beliefs and many other things that
define human life.
