Brief Facts Jamaica is a Caribbean island that has a
topography in the mountains.
about They are the third largest island that is in
the Caribbean Islands.
Jamaica The capital of Jamaica is Kingston and the
official language of Jamaica is English.
All year round there is warm weather as
Jamaica does have a tropical climate. The
hottest time of the month in Jamaica is
June where the weather usually ranges
around eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit.
The coolest time of a year is around
January and even though it gets a bit
cooler it still ranges around eighty-four
degrees.
Jamaica’s History
Jamaica was one of the islands that Christopher Columbus first
sighted in the year 1494. However, he called the island Santiago,
but the indigenous name of Jamaica was the one that lasted.
Just like Columbus many travelers feel as though Jamaica is one of
the most beautiful islands that is in the Caribbean.
Jamaica was also under the United Kingdom for a time however,
they became independent in the year 1962. But even though they
are not under the rule of the U.K. they are still a member of the
Commonwealth.
Jamaica’s Climate
 As I said before Jamaica is consider to have a tropical climate.
However, there are coastal breezes that blow on the shore during the
daytime and at night they blow offshore.
 In the “winter” months winds from the North American mainland come
onto the island. These winds are called “northers” by the people who
live in the area.
 In the months of October and May is usually when the get their rain
fall. But they also get thunderstorms in the summertime.
 As far as natural disasters Jamaica has experienced hurricanes in the
years of 1951, 1988, 2004, and 2007 which had happened during the
summertime.
 They also have experienced earthquakes which caused severe
damage to the island in 1692 and in 1907. So, they have not really
experienced any in recent years.
The official language is English in
Jamaica however, Creole is another
language that is also spoken in
Jamaica.
The With the Creole a lot of the
vocabulary as well as the grammar is
Jamaican based on the English vocabulary and
grammar.
Language However, the have different dialects
that come from the vocabulary of
other countries such as French,
Spanish, and West African.
In Jamaica there are many
different religions that are
practiced due to the freedom of
worship.
However, many are Protestant,
The some are Seventh-day Adventist,
others attend the Anglican
Religion church, the Moravian church, and
the United church. Some also
are apart of the Ethiopian
Orthodox Tewahedo church. As
well as many other religions.
Food in Jamaica
 In Jamaica they eat foods that richly flavored with spices such as ginger and nutmeg. Another spice that is very
common in Jamaica is allspice this spice is one of the spices that they export. They get the ingredient for the spice
from the berries that come from the pimento plant.
 Another common food in Jamaica is bammy which is basically a toasted bread that is like a wafer that comes from
cassava which is apart of the root of a tropical tree that is starchy.
 Foods that are also common is seafood as they are in the Caribbean sea so they have access to these foods.
 Fruits that they grow in Jamaica that they eat is coconuts, pineapples, plantains, guava, mangoes, bananas, ackee,
and papaya.
 Something also commonly known in Jamaica is the term “jerking” which is when they season their meats and
slowing cook them to help keep the flavor in the meat.
History of Tourism in Jamaica
Tourism in Jamaica started in the end part of the nineteenth
century when people started to go to Jamaica to from North
America and England to get a way from the winter seasons.
The hotels for tourist was first built in 1892, however during that
time it was for people who were wealthy.
But it started to pick up and become more prosperous after World
War I. This happened because not only did they provide hotels but
the also provided transportation.
In recent years tourism has really
blossomed, Jamaica is a very common
place where people want to go to for
vacation. Tourism is really important for

countries.

Now in
They have restaurants, activities, and
resorts, as well as shops that all are
based for the tourists.

Jamaica A lot of people go to the resorts but, to


really get the experience it is great to go
into the towns where people live to get
the full experience of the Jamaican
culture.
