Research Proposal

Part 1: Introduction
• The introduction section consists of:
• Outline of the research problem and the motivation for doing it.
• Some literature to support the first tenet that the research is
relevant and a question of substance in the field of study. This may
include popular business press articles. The purpose is to outline
the background and context to situate your thesis research.
• A final paragraph that states what is in the proposal. Start this
paragraph with “In this proposal….”
Part 2: Literature review
Your overall “claim” or “argument” is your assessment of a
body of literature relevant to your proposal topic. You are
presenting your assessment of the literature relevant to
your project, and to do that you must assess the main
arguments/claim/thesis of each of the articles.
Part 3: Research questions/objectives and backing
• It consists of the main research questions you want to
answer as well as any sub-questions. These are normally
stated in the form of a question.
• State what gap in the knowledge that will be filled. Use the
literature to back the claim that there is a gap.
• Summarize the theoretical perspective and framework
being used.
Part 4: Methodology
• State whether the research is inductive or deductive
• State the hypotheses to be evaluated and provide a
justification for them.
• Describe the research methods that are planned including the
method of analyzing data. Explain:
• What data is to be collected/data sources and where will the data be
collected (e.g., if people are involved, how many people, and from where will
they be recruited)
• How the data will be collected/what instruments or equipment will be used
(e.g., interviews, online survey, databases, archival data, Internet, etc.).
• How will the data be analyzed (statistically using what specific statistics and
why, thematic analysis, content analysis, etc.). Provide a justification of the
analysis techniques.
• How will reliability and validity be carried out (if appropriate)
Part 5: Contributions, timeline, and budget
• State what knowledge type you want to generate (e.g., knowledge
for explanation, knowledge for action).
• A better explanation provides a new description, framework,
explanatory model, predictive model that can better explain the
empirical observations than existing ones.
• A better action provides a better model, framework, approach for
doing the research than currently exists.
• Who will benefit from the research.
• Provide a chart that shows the different components of the
research and when they will be accomplished. Provide a chart that
shows the cost items necessary to carry out the thesis research
and how the costs will be covered.
