WHAT IS GENRE?
• Genre is a French word which means type, kind or category.
• It is pronounced as “Jon-Dra”
• Genres are formed by conventions that change over the time.
CLASSIFICATION OF GENRE
• Genre has considered its principle task to divide the world of literature into types and the
naming of those types.
• There are 4 main genres i.e. Literary, film and television, video games, and music genres.
• These genres are further divided into sub genres like action, adventure, comedy, crime,
fantasy, horror etc.

• Genre analysis means the way a textual discourse is analyzed and interpreted.

• It started from 1558 till 1603
• It is called the golden age of England

• Dr. Samuel Johnson generated a new type of criticism.
ROMANTIC AGE
• Also known as romanticism & was from the period of 1800 to 1850
• William Wordsworth brought out the genre of sonnets, ballads, romantic epic and odes.
• William Blake focused on divine poetry.
• Jane Austin introduced social novels of lower middle class like Emma.
MODERN AGE
• This started from 1900 till 1950
• In modern age social, comical, satirical and ironic plays and a new type of poetry
including classical and romantic style were published.
• The most important was the evolution of science fiction.

• Genre underwent various changes because of their close relationship with socio cultural
conventions.
