INTRODUCTION

Critical Thinking/Creative Thinking has been discussed among scholars and

mentioned in educational realms. Nevertheless, as a formal subject, it has not
been integrated into the universities curricula. Its substantive functions that
impact the pedagogy and research tasks, as well as the expansion and support
activities of the university, deserve careful attention; due to the fact that it is
applicable and relevant to all fields of study and disciplines. The need for
developing a formal course is being seriously explored by many universities
around the world, while in others, it has already been created and implemented.
COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course examines the fundamental concepts, techniques and processes for
developing a clear way of thinking, making reasoned judgments, identifying
right choices and its pragmatic applications on all situations, and to stir up the
natural ability for creativity.
OBJECTIVE

Participants will develop a wider perspective of the thought process that

empowers individuals to make better and more appropriate decisions in order to
enhance their problem solving skills and find suitable ways to enrich personal
creativity. At the end of the course, students will be able to: (1) apply
knowledge to life practical situations, (2) enhance vocational performance, (3)
generate innovative solutions, (4) create original plans, effective, feasible
teaching strategies, (5) improve social and professional functioning, and (6)
aim for excellence in all endeavors.
ASSESSMENT

Attendance and/or punctuality, social interaction and class

participation will be contributing factors towards successful
completion of this course.

you can’t, you are right”

DETECTING AND IDENTIFIYING “STOP
AND OBSERVE”
Stop, Observe, Find it and Name it. The First step to engage critical and
creative thinking is to become aware. Self-awareness and becoming
aware of your surroundings
1. A situation? 8. A feeling?
2. An idea? 9. A possibility?
3. A condition? 10.A sickness?
4. A need? 11.A danger?
5. An opportunity? 12.A threat?
6. A problem? 13.A risk?
7. An obstacle? 14.A challenge?
DETECTING AND IDENTIFIYING “STOP
AND OBSERVE”
Life is dynamic, vibrant, never-stopping, complex, and
multifaceted as well as difficult and complicated. It demands
careful attention to its challenges and opportunities. It takes a
proactive approach to create innovative solutions and develop
fresh methods and techniques.

“If nothing is happening, be careful,

something is happening”.
ANALYZING AND
UNDERSTANDING
A comprehensive examination is conducive to understanding the nature of the
issue and establishing its essential characteristics.

 What it is
 How it works
 How to do it
 How it relates to a specific field of expertise

Understanding enhances creativity, encourages enthusiasm, stimulates

the imagination and sharpens the problem solving skills.
ANALYZING AND
UNDERSTANDING

“Understanding is much deeper than Knowledge. There

are many people who know us, but very few who
understand us”.

EVALUATING AND CATEGORIZING

Knowledge and understanding provides an opportunity to make an

informed approach in order to assess the worth, determine significance,
find qualities, set the merit and get an overall insight of the issue.
Nevertheless, it becomes necessary to take into account that, potentially,
there may be diverse standards for evaluating the subject depending on
the context and parties involved in the process. Otherwise it is the
individual’s prerogative to set the value of the matter. There are some
reasonable factors or criteria to consider when determining worth.
EVALUATING AND CATEGORIZING

 Impact
 Merit
 Functionality
 Feasibility
 Effectiveness
 Benefits
 Results
 Ethics
CATEGORIZING

Classifying contributes to better understand the issues, organize information, clarify

doubts, facilitate solutions, keep focused and avoid confusion. It can be useful to
determine the importance, relevance and level of urgency. There are some categories
to consider, although, this is not an all-inclusive list.
 Physical needs
 Financial commitments or situation
 Social (relational) interactions
 Academic performance
 Cultural Issues
EVALUATING AND CATEGORIZING

“Un lugar para cada cosa y cada cosa en su

lugar”.

Popular Mexican Saying

REFLECTING AND DEDUCING RESULTS
AND SCOPE OF CONSEQUENCES
To obtain clear ideas and draw the best conclusions, it becomes necessary
to give careful thought to the previous information. Quiet, calm and deep
reasoning is vital in order to develop an acceptable opinion and reach a
conclusion especially when it comes to an ethical matter. To cogitate with
intent helps to clarify the mental activity so a sensible conclusion can be
inferred.
REFLECTING AND DEDUCING RESULTS
AND SCOPE OF CONSEQUENCES
 Is it right?
 Is it beneficial?
 Is it practical?
 Is it necessary?
 What about career plans?
 What about continuing education?
 What about trying a new approach?
 What about developing a new method?
REFLECTING AND DEDUCING RESULTS
AND SCOPE OF CONSEQUENCES
These and other similar questions will help to get an idea and visualize
the extent of influence, the far reaching effect in a positive manner or
the lack of it. The law of cause and effect is entirely applicable at this
point.
PRIORITIZING (ORDER OF PRECEDENCE)
AND MAKING CHOICES

Life, work, relations and family pressures people to making sure

priorities are in the correct order and to strive to maintain those priorities
in its proper place. Setting priorities is a must for successful people.
Establishing what is the most important and urgent helps to determine
what, how and when to do it. Defining those priorities is up to each
individual according the circumstances and context. After all pertinent
information has been gathered and alternative solutions have been
considered, taking a choice is the last step in the decision making process.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE TO
PROBLEM SOLVING AND CREATIVITY
These principles are applicable to all areas of life, whether a problem
solving setting or a situation where creativity is seriously needed by
enhancing academic performance, making connection across disciplines
and providing with an opportunity to professionally excel as well.
DETERRENTS/SUPPORT

The critical/creative thinker may encounter some or several limiting

factors that could potentially become restrictive barriers to (1) the
clarifying thinking process, (2) the development of a creative activity or
project and (3) the implementation of a strategic initiative, especially if
this a novel one. Way too many creative thinkers with a progressive and
visionary mind have been discouraged of pursuing their endeavor
without even trying. However, a critical thinker strives to find an
answer and method to overcome hindrances and obstacles.
DETERRENTS/SUPPORT

 Socio-psychological factors
a. Culture and Opinions
b. Moral Standards and Family Upbringing
c. Perceptions, Attitudes and biases
d. Age and Level of Education
e. Personal agenda
f. Ulterior Motives
g. Alcohol, drugs and the use of other mind altering substances
h. Apathy
REINFORCING REASON OVER
EMOTIONS
Emotions are an integral part of the human being and play an important
role in all realms of life. However, they have to be handled with great
care because they can be positive or negative. Anger, frustration,
disappointment, excitement, happiness, just to name a few, if not treated
with caution, our decision making and creativity may be influenced in an
undesirable way. Emotions are only indicators not an absolute guide.
Applicable Principles to All fields of
Study, Disciplines and Areas of Life
The aforementioned concepts are universal, rational guidelines to find
sensible and coherent answers to diverse types of problems. They can
assist the scholar and the researcher by inspiring creativity, encouraging
effectiveness in teaching strategies, fostering research activities in the
quest for knowledge, pioneering innovation and setting the stage for
success.
