TIMELINE
• Back in the year 1980’s, a group of four friends in
Bungkawn,Aizawl started a philanthropic work by
collecting the donations from well wishers and
distributing new dresses bought with this
donations to the poor, which later paved the way
for the birth of this voluntary organisation.
• But with the passage of time , Firm and Societies
registration was done on 1995 with the hope of
increasing this philanthropic work.
• After this registration, the organisation started to
take projects and became one of the most well
known agencies in the State.
OBJECTIVES

• To have an understanding of the nature of


Agency’s work and their functions.
• To understand the pattern of substance
abuse and its related problems
• To assess the needs and challenges of the
clients registered at the agency
• To improve one’s own knowledge and
skills required for the practice of social
work

Who are substance abuser ?

• Substance abuser are those who take drugs that are


not legal. It’s also when they use alcohol,
prescription medicine, and other legal substances
too much or in the wrong way.
• Examples of commonly abused substances are
Alcohol, Marijuana, illicit drugs such as Heroin,
cocaine, etc.
• Problem related to substance abuse - Getting a
communicable disease, health problems,
Accidents, Suicide, Family problems, Work issues,
Financial problems etc
CAUSES OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE

1. Peer pressure
2. Family history of addiction
3. Mental health disorder such as
depression, loneliness, anxiety,
post traumatic stress disorder etc.
4. Taking of highly addictive drugs
such as heroin.
5. Lack of family involvement.
EFFECTS OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE.

• Damage to organs, such as the heart, brain,


and liver
• Diseases, such as heart disease, HIV, and
cancer
• Development of other mental illnesses
• Damage to social network or relationships
• Loss of job or other financial issues
• Legal troubles

FINDINGS FROM WORK DONE

• From the record the trainee found that there are 418 clients out
of which 188 are HIV positive.
• First drugs use were mainly alcohol and pills like
Aprozalam,Tramadol etc.
• Mean age of first drugs use was 14 years.
• More than half started doing through peer pressure and curiosity
• Most of them at one point in their addiction life tried to cease
their drug use.
• The minimum age of registering clients at the agency is 18 years
old but the trainee found that teenagers as young as 16 years are
registered.
• There is a huge lack of family involvement upon substance
abusers .
• OST therapy is potent in tackling Drug users.
SELF EVALUATION
• This field work increase the trainee observation skills, writing
skills, listening skills and communication skills.
• It enrich the trainee knowledge on High Risk Group and
Bridge Group.
• It widens the trainee understanding on OST and its effects.
• It enables the trainee to see how much intervention/ awareness
is needed among adolescents.
• The trainee also learn family intervention is very less among
substance abusers.
• The trainee also finds there is a huge need of awareness among
YMA and within the community.
