WHY IS MENTAL HEALTH IMPORTANT IN THE WORKPLACE?

Mental Health Issues Affect Businesses and Their Employees. Poor mental health
and stress can negatively affect employee in the following ways:
• Job performance and productivity.
• Engagement with one’s work.
• Communication with coworkers.
• Physical capability and daily functioning.
• Mental illnesses such as depression are associated with higher rates of disability
and unemployment.
• Depression interferes with a person’s ability to complete physical job tasks about
20% of the time and reduces cognitive performance about 35% of the time.
OVERVIEW

• Mental illness is a general term for a group of illnesses that may include
symptoms that can affect a person’s thinking, perceptions, mood or
behaviour.
• Mental illness can make it difficult for someone to cope with work,
relationships and other demands.
• The relationship between stress and mental illness is complex, but it is
known that stress can worsen an episode of mental illness.
• Most people can manage their mental illness with medication, counselling or
both.
OVERVIEW

• Anxiety Disorder is a very common problem in the workplace.


• Depression is one of the leading health problems in an organization as it
might not effect the overall output but the mental health of the person
which might not be visible to another person.
• Paranoia is a common problem in a workplace as everyone in an
organization is trying to get in a better position, which might make a
person paranoid and feel that everyone is out to get them.
EXAMPLES

• The Japanese have a output related organization.


• The Americans try being more friendlier and employee related
organization.
• The Japanese has a word for “working yourself to death: karoshi.”
•  Even though their output is great and they do good work, their
constant approval of their superiors makes emotionally vulnerable as
without the approval they might not be mentally satisfied.
INTERNATIONAL CONDITION OF MENTAL
HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE

• The global workforce suffers approximately $1.3 trillion worth of losses annually
due to mental health and a lack of awareness about and support for it. (research
conducted by a mental health charity 2019).
• In the UK the majority of work absences can be said to have mental illness as
their second highest contributor which is approximately 15.4 million workdays or
1 in every 10 working hours.
• mental health issues cause significant problems in the workplace the likes of
“lack of focus”, “inability to multitask”, “stress management” and “problems in
interpersonal interaction”.
WHY?
• People hide their poor mental state for fear of discrimination, harassment or prejudice
which often leads to a worsening of the situation.
• A poor mental state is often viewed due to its “invisibility”.
• Businesses are more concerned with “bottom-line”.
• However, the scene for mental health issues a lot more commendable now than in
the past.
• New Zealand, Japan, OMNI and Delta Airlines, etc., (research conducted by Monster and Kununu
from Aug 2016 to July 2017)
INDIAN SCENARIO

• The organized sector suffers significant loss of effective workforce through


mental ill-health.
• Mainly due long working hours compared to the western countries.
• Pressure of sustaining in a inflated economy in minimum wages.
• Shorter weekends.
• Being a developing economy, huge work burden.
• Keeping at par with the societal expectations.
