Bara Gumbad History History
■ Bara Gumbad is a medieval monument located in Lodhi Gardens in Delhi, India.
■ It was constructed in 1490 CE, during the reign of the Lodhi dynasty. ■ Tomb of Sikandar Lodhi and Shisha Gumbad also share the same platform as Bara Gumbad, but all three were constructed at different times. Structure Plan ■ It is speculated that the Bara Gumbad was constructed to provide a gateway to the nearby mosque or a large walled enclosure. Although the structure does not house any tomb, there is a platform in the central courtyard that suggests the structure to be a burial place. The purpose Bara Gumbad is unknown. Bara Gumbad is grouped together with a mosque and "mehman khana" which is a smaller structure with five bays. All the structures are constructed on a 4 metres (13 ft) high platform, with a total area of 1,050 square metres (11,302 sq ft). The platform measures 30 metres (98 ft) (east-west) and 25 metres (82 ft) (north-south). Structure Details ■ set on a high platform which is 3 m. in height ■ raised platform measures 30 m. by 25 m. ■ In front of northern side of Bara Gumbad, there lies a courtyard 104` by 82` ■ Bara Gumbad is square in plan measuring approximately 20 meters per side and 29 meters in height. ■ The total height of the building is 29 meters above ground level. Dome Details Material - constructed of red sandstone , grey(grey quartzite) and black stone are used for arches and other detailing. Shape - Dome of Bara Gumbad is complete hemispherical Plaster is done for inscriptions and decoration ■ The walls of the Bara Gumbad are approximately 12 meters tall, above which rises a hemispherical dome on a hex decagonal drum extends another 14 meters from the roof level. ■ The dome of Bara Gumbad rests on a drum which Interior of Bara Dome is sixteen sided. ■ On all the sides there is a panel contains niche with spandrels ■ There is a lotus bud frieze over the panel which is further superimposed by a string course which is molded.
