BIONESS L300 AND NEURO

REHABILITATION
B Y: R I L E Y B A L L A R D
WHAT IS IT AND WHAT DOES IT DO?

• The Bioness L300 is the most up-to-date 3-D motion functional E-stim
system and most widely used among neuro rehab clinics today
• This system is completely wireless and has the ability to adapt and detect
changes in gait speed and contractility of the tibialis A, quadriceps, and
hamstring muscles.
• Can help eliminate need for rigid ortheses or braces.
POPULATIONS

• The Bioness system can be utilized in virtually all populations, from

patients who are post-CVA to general deconditioning.
• Primarily utilized for correcting gait patterns, such as foot drop, due to
muscle insufficiency or decreased tone.
COMPONENTS & MODES

• The L300 system consists of 2 functional stimulation (FS) cuffs, Radio

frequency (RF) stim unit, Intelli- gait sensor, gait sensor pads, and a
control unit.
• Gait mode: motion sensors in lower leg EPG detects position and send the
appropriate signals to that same EPG. The EPG signal of lower leg is then
sent the upper thigh cuff, and together providing a reciprocating motion of
the leg
(Ex. Tib A EPG activation in terminal stance – midstance; and Hamstring
EPG activation in swing phase)
• Training Mode: Uses pre-set cycles – on/off; ramp up/ramp down time,
etc: primarily used to reduce muscle atrophy.
SUPPORT ARTICLE #1
• Mean stride length (involved) Step Length (uninvolved)

• Admission, Intermediate, Discharge

• Each participant demonstrated improvements in SLS time,
stride length, step length, and decreased terminal double
support time (in both involved and uninvolved
• Standard therapy + AFO vs. Standard therapy + Bioness
