Pakistan

1958-69

Martial law
General Muhammad Ayub Khan deposed
Iskander Mirza in October 1958. He imposed
Martial Law. During the period of Ayub Khan,
the war between Pakistan and India started in
1965. It was the period when Fatima Jinnah
took part in practical politics and contested
election against General Ayub Khan. President
General Ayub Khan ruled almost ten years.
BASIC DEMOCRACIES
• In 1959, the President introduced a new
system of Basic Democracies.

1965
• Border incidents became frequent from Jan
1965 to onwards.
• At Runn of Kutch, India was badly defeated
by Pak army.
• But on Feb 19,1965 tribunal gave northern
350 sq. miles to Pak and rest to Ind.
Tashqand Treaty
• This Treaty was Signed by Ayub khan and
Indian Prime Minister .
• The aim of this Treaty was To Cease fire in
1965 war.
• Pakistan’s president Ayub Khan, ending the
17-day war between Pakistan and India.
1969
• Constitution of 1962 abrogated.
• Ayub handed over to Gen. Yahya Khan on
March 25,1969.
• Martial law was enforced again.
• ZA Bhutto appeared as Chairman of PPP, the
same year.
Regime of General Yahya Khan
• General Muhammad Yahya Khan took
over government from General Ayub
Khan. First general elections of Pakistan
were held in 1970. In December 1971,
East Pakistan was separated and became
a new country named Bangladesh
