Proses Dan Prospek Dalam Fenomena Urbanisasi Dunia Dan Yang Terjadi Di Indonesia

Urbanization has been occurring globally for thousands of years, beginning in ancient Mesopotamia and spreading to other ancient civilizations. Modern urbanization began during the industrial revolution and has since occurred in waves, with the current wave being defined by rapid urban growth in developing countries in Asia, Africa, and South America. By 2050, nearly two-thirds of the world's population is projected to live in urban areas, with most of the urban population growth occurring in cities in developing regions. Urbanization in Indonesia has also increased rapidly since the early 20th century, with over half of Indonesia's population now living in urban areas concentrated on the island of Java.

Proses dan Prospek Urbanisasi Dunia
Ancient Urbanization
• Ancient Urbanization:
– Urbanization began in ancient Mesopotamia in the Uruk
Period (4300-3100 BCE)
– Urbanization was also existed in ancient Indus Valley:
• Harappa (Punjab), Mohenjo-daro (Sindh), Rupar (Punjab) were
the main city centres.
• Pre- Harappan (4th millennia - 2600 BC), Mature Harappa
(towards 1900 BCE) & then, decline (1750 BCE).
– Urbanization spread from Mesopotamia to Egypt and,
from there, to Greece (1350 BCE)
– China..? Maya..? Others..?
“Modern” Urbanization
• First wave Urbanization (1750 – 1950):
– originated in Britain, after the industrial revolution
– In Britain, the urbanization rate jumped from 17% in 1801 to 54% in 1891,
– Then spread to other modern states in (Western) Europe in the course of the
19th century
– the number of people living in cities rise from 15-million people to 423-million.
– Most of the expanding urban population were in the developed world and most of the
new arrivals were absorbed by the rapidly industrializing economies of these big
nations.
• Second wave Urbanization (1950 – now):
– It is very different to the first wave
– Most of the urbanization will take place in the cities of the south, including in Africa.
– the numbers of people arriving in cities is expected to increase from just under half a
billion to almost four billion people by 2030.
– This has enormous implications for governments, policy planners, scholars and of
course for those people themselves.
– Inequality and income generation will become increasingly critical. as literally billions
of people cram into cities and towns in search of work,.
