VFX COMPOSITING
AN OVERVIEW TO THE COURSE AT OPENSLATE
WHAT DOES IT MEAN ?
• Compositing is the combining of visual elements from separate sources/departments into one single
shot, often to create the illusion that all those elements are parts of the same scene.
• Live-action shooting for compositing is variously called "chroma key", "blue screen", "green screen"
and other names.
• Visual effect compositing (10 months + 2 months of portfolio and soft skills)
• FX artists create the mindblowing effects seen on screen or in games, but this job requires the ability to
engage successfully in trouble shooting. An FX artist may be asked to work on things like smoke, fire,
destruction, and water, but even smaller tasks such as an object colliding with another object or
simulating liquid in a glass.
• The goal in creating all of these effects is to do it seamlessly so the audience doesn’t think about the fact
that the effects are computer generated.
• The job of the FX artist is essential in today’s entertainment business, as most films/tv shows/games
require digital effects.
FX ARTIST
• Lighting artist(Lighter) virtually lights up the scene to get realistic results matching the original shot or
light an entire Cg shot.
• Lighter needs a strong understanding of light direction, intensity and shading.
• Proper lighting techniques are essential in creating stylized and natural-looking shots that look much
closer to real life as digital sensors and film don’t react as well to light as our eyes do. This is why
Lighting scenes always seem to be packed with many different light sources that serve different
purposes.
