P3 - Barrel and Cover

The P3 integral impeller,
attached to the rotating
barrel, develops a
pressure boost of 7-14 psi
to the inlet port This
supercharge pressure is
also an advantage for
hydraulic systems used
in high elevation
applications , eliminating
the need for inlet
pressure boost pumps or
pressurized reservoirs.

P2/P3 Controls
o Load Sense Control
 Load sense control will adjust output flow to maintain
a constant pressure drop across an orifice
o Pressure Compensator
 The pressure compensator control will limit pump
outlet pressure to a predetermined level and adjust
pump outlet flow to the level needed to maintain the
set pressure.
o Remote Pressure Compensator
 Same as the pressure compensator , except that the
adjustment is done with a remotely located relief valve
instead of at the pump control.
o Torque Limiter Control
 Will adjust flow to limit the input torque demand of
the pump

P2/P3 Load Sense Control P2/P3 Controls

Good things to Know

• Standard Load Sense Delta P setting is 300 psi.
• Standby Pressure is the pressure level the pump will maintain with no load sense
signal. This is typically 10-20 psi higher than the Load Sense Delta P setting
• Higher LS spring setting = faster response,
but lower system efficiency
• The load sense bleed option (LB) will vent the load sense signal to allow the pump to
go to low pressure standby when there is no flow demand. This function is typically
and best accomplished in the load sense system valve, but if the system valve does
not have this feature, it can be ordered in the pump. The disadvantage of having the
bleed in the pump is that there is a continuous loss of this bleed flow through the
pump control even when the pump is operating normal.
• Rule of Thumb : Volume of Load sense line should beat least 10% or greater of the
volume of the outlet line to the point of the load sense signal.
• With Torque Control , it’s good to use the “copy “ port for the load sense signal,
because it provides extra flow needed for the torque control.

remote relief valve

maximum.
 When relief valve setting
is reached, the pump de-

pump will maintain
remote relief valve

yesterday, today, and tomorrow

Remote Control P2/P3 Controls

Good things to Know

• Standard Remote Compensator Differential Spring setting is 300 psi.
This pressure is additive to the setting of the remote relief valve.
• Standby Pressure is the pressure level the pump will maintain with
the remote signal line vented to tank. This is typically 10-20 psi
higher than the differential setting.
• The remote control pilot flow is about 1 GPM.
• The “ PA” pressure compensator control can be converted to a “RA”
remote control by removing the plug in the “X” Port and connecting
that port to a remote relief valve.

yesterday, today, and tomorrow

Torque Limiter Control P2/P3 Controls
• The torque limiter control will vary pump displacement so that a
desired maximum input torque level to the pump is maintained.
Typically this desired torque level is the maximum torque available
for the hydraulic functions on a machine…the intent is to have the
pump controlled to use the input power available most efficiently…
when high force is needed the pump will provide high pressure;
when high speed is needed the pump will provide high flow.

Torque
Control
Cartridge

yesterday, today, and tomorrow

Torque Limiter Control P2/P3 Controls
• The Torque Limiter Control is achieved by the addition of a special
cartridge relief valve that controls the maximum pressure in the load
sense port . The torque control cartridge relief valve setting is a
function of the pump displacement . Since Torque is directly related
to pressure and displacement , this valve acts as a torque limiter.

yesterday, today, and tomorrow

Torque Limiter Control P2/P3 Controls

Good things to Know

• The “TA” torque control is really three controls in one because it also
has a load sense control and a pressure limiter control function
included.

• The pump will be controlled in the load sense mode at flow &
pressure conditions below the torque setting . Once the input torque
setting is reached , the pump will be controlled by the torque control.

• The maximum pump pressure is controlled by the pressure limiter.

yesterday, today, and tomorrow

Torque Limiter Control P2/P3 Controls
• The Torque Control relief valve spring tension is adjusted by the
position of the link piston, which is connected to the swashplate. As
the pump destrokes , the spring tension is increased and the load
sense pressure is allowed to go to a higher level before the torque
control opens.

P2/P3 Controls
Converting to a Torque Control Pump
P2 pumps with LA control can be converted to TA control (20-60%
range) by removing the plug in the housing , adding a orifice plug in
the X port and adding torque control cartridge to port in housing.

Add Orifice Plug to X Port

Add Torque Control Cartridge

Remove Plug 226 x56 to

open passage from load
sense control to torque
control

Note : This conversion can

only be done when
converting to the 20-60%
torque range, because the
pumps with LA control are
shipped with the 20-60%
link piston.

Installation Requirements

Fluid recommendation
Proper fluid conditions are essential for long and satisfactory life of hydraulic components and systems.
Hydraulic fluid must have the correct balance of cleanliness, materials and additives for protection against
wear of components, elevated viscosity and inclusion of air. For correct selection of the fluid it is assumed
that the operating temperature in the tank is known. The fluid should be selected so that, within the
operating temperature range, the operating viscosity lies within the optimum viscosity range.

Installation Requirements

Installation and mounting

Mounting altitude can be either horizontal or vertical, using the appropriate case drain port to ensure that
the case remains full of fluid at all times.

Direction of shaft rotation, viewed from the prime mover end, must be as indicated in the model code or at
the pump.

Direct coaxial drive through a flexible coupling is recommended.

Start-up procedure
Make sure the reservoir and circuit is clean and free of dirt/ debris prior to tilling with hydraulic fluid.

Fill the reservoir with filtered oil and fill to a level sufficient enough to prevent vortexing at the suction
connection to pump inlet. It is good practice to clean the system by flushing and filtering, using an external
slave pump. Before the pump is started, fill the case through the uppermost drain port with hydraulic fluid
of the type to be used. The case drain line must be connected directly to the reservoir and must terminate
below the lowest oil level.

Installation Requirements
Thru drive mounting, choose input shaft to handle total torque of
combination.
 T = P X D / 2X 1.1 (mechanical losses)
T = Total torque
P = Pressure in PSI
D = Displacement in In³/rev
Example: 2 ; P2145’s in tandem, both at full flow & 4300 PSI simultaneously at times. P2145 = 8.85 X 2 pumps = 17.7
In³/rev
4300 X 17.7 / 2= 12,119 In/lbs x 1.1 = 13,331 In/lbs total
Only shaft options “D1” and “D3” would be recommended.
