Chithirai Thirunal – Tamil New Year

- 14th April is traditionally celebrated as Tamil New


year, although two years back, Tamil Nadu
Government has declared 14th Jan as Tamil New Year.

- Hence Retailers call 14th April as “Chithirai Thirunal”,


i.e. the beginning of Chithirai Month, which is the first
month in the Tamil calendar.
Significance of Chithirai Thirunal

- People adorn the entrance of their houses by colorful


Kolams (Rangoli).

- Centre of the Kolam is decorated with traditional


lamp (Kuthuvilakku) which is believed to dispel
darkness.

- Auspicious things like gold & silver jewellery, betel


leaves, nuts, fruits & vegetables, flowers, raw rice &
coconut are kept in front of mirror & offered to God.
Significance of Chithirai Thirunal

- People wear New clothes & visit temples.

- They relish best of food & have “Manga Pachadi”, a


sweet, sour & bitter dish made of Mango, Jaggery &
Neem, to signify the three aspects of life.

Significance of Akshaya
tritiya
 According to Hindu mythology, Akshay Tritiiya was the
day when Veda Vyasa started dictating the epic
Mahabharata to Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of
wisdom and obstacle removal.

 It is also traditionally observed as the birthday of


Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of god Vishnu. The
Puranic scriptures speak about how he reclaimed the
land from the sea.

 Goa and Konkan regions, even today, are referred to as


Parusurama Kshetra. Akshaya Tritiya, the third day of
the bright-half of the lunar month of Vaisakha is
considered as one of the most sacred days of the year.
•In Orissa on Akshay Tritiya farmers start ploughing
their land and construction of chariots for Rath Yatra
begins at Puri.

•The day is generally observed by fasting and


worship Lord Vasudeva with rice grains. A dip in the
river Ganges on this day is considered to be very
auspicious.

•The Vedic scriptures say that knowledge gained or


charity done on this day is very fruitful. It is
considered to be very lucky day to start new business
or venture. Many people buy gold or property on this
day.

Significance of Thiruonam

 Onam is an ancient festival which still survives in the


Modern times.

 Kerala's rice harvest festival and the festival of rain flowers


which fell on the Malayalam month of Chingam celebrated
the annual visit from pathalam of the very noble Demon
King Maveli.

 Onam is unique since king Maveli is revered by people of


Kerala from prehistory.
Thiruonam Activities

 The most important things about Onam are the


onakkodi, the new clothes worn on this day and onam
sadya, a feast which is quite elaborate.

 This is usually a feast served on banana leaves and


serves rice along with at least an array of 4 dishes.
Traditional pickles and papadam are also served.
Dessert is usually 'payasam', a sweet dish made of
milk, sugar and other traditional Indian savories.

 During Onam, people create a multi-coloured floral


decoration on the ground in the front of their home
called pookkalam.
Thiruonam activities
 Young children especially girls are often
entrusted with the task of gathering and laying
out the flowers in elaborate patterns.
 Competitions are held on onam day to create
this floral design. It is usually 1.5 m in Diameter
usually in circular shape.
 A lamp is usually placed as part of the design.
In the recent years, the floral designs have
evolved from the traditional circular shape to
unique designs depicting different cultural and
social aspects of Kerala life.

Ramzaan

Significance of Ramzaan
 In Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Nepal, the night before
Eid is called Chaand Raat, which means, "Night of the
Moon." Muslims in these countries will often visit bazaars
and shopping malls with their families for Eid shopping.
Women, especially younger girls, will often apply the
traditional Mehndi, or henna, on their hands and feet and
wear colourful bangles.
 The traditional Eid greeting is Eid Mubarak, and it is
frequently followed by a formal embrace. Gifts are
frequently given — new clothes are part of the tradition —
and it is also common for children to be given small sums of
money (Eidi) by their elders. It is common for children to
offer salam to parents and adult relatives.
Significance of Ramzaan
 After the Eid prayers, it is common for some families to visit
graveyards and pray for the salvation of departed family members.

 In India, the some popular places for Muslims to congregate to


celebrate Eid at this time include the Jama Masjid in New Delhi, in
Kolkata there is a prayer held on Red Road.
 Muslims turn out in the thousands, as there is a lot of excitement
surrounding the celebration of this festival. Eid is a public holiday
and is celebrated all over India. It is even common for non-
Muslims to visit their Muslim friends and neighbours on Eid to
convey their good wishes.

 South Asians celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr for three days

of the day.
