MLS 1: UNIT 2 – DEFINING THE PRACTICE OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE

Lessons A and B: August 25, 2021
SYNCHRONOUS CLASS

At the end of the unit, the students should be able to:

1. Define medical technology/medical laboratory science.
2. Discuss the nature of the work of a medical technologist/MLS..
3. Discuss the scope of RA 005527 with regards to the Board Examination.
(Students can search in the Internet any term/procedure they cannot
understand.)
What is medical technology?
According to Republic Act 005527 or the Philippine
Medical Technology Act of 1969:
“it is an auxiliary branch of laboratory medicine
which deals with the examination by various chemical,
microscopic, bacteriologic and other medical laboratory
procedures or technique which will aid the physician in
the diagnosis, study and treatment of disease and in the
promotion of health in general.”
NATURE OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
1. It is a dynamic profession. The science is evolving through the years
because of new discoveries through research.
2. As a science, it deals with the study of the natural world: the physical,
chemical and molecular characteristics of living things - the human
body, the patient, the client who is found in the hospital and
community.
3. Technology is used to study the person, the patient or the client.
It is a design for instrumental action that reduces the uncertainty
in the cause-effect relationships involved in achieving an outcome.
4. Medical technology is designed to improve the detection, diagnosis
and treatment of diseases.
5. The nature of medical technology is that it is contextual, inter-
disciplinary, interdependent, and systems-based. It can be in a
hospital or community setting.
6. Medical technologists use clinical laboratory testing. The tests are
performed based on scientific discoveries and inventions.
Example: To test if a patient is diabetic or not:
a.) Extract blood – skills are needed to locate the blood vessel for
blood extraction; sterile techniques have to be
observed.
b.) Blood containment – proper container, anticoagulant, labelling,
bar coding are important to safeguard the blood
specimen from contamination and misplacement.
c.) Determination of blood sugar level – uses a computerized
automated machine (invented), requires skills of the
med-tech to use the machine
d.) Quality control – used to determine the accuracy and
precision of the test
e.) Reporting – uses computer for the generation of results
f.) Transport of results to the physician – uses Local Area
Network (LAN) of the hospital; e-mail if the
physician is away.
All these steps are technologically-based which requires the
Med-Tech to have enough learnings in basic sciences such as
Anatomy & Physiology, Computers, English, Laboratory Manage-
ment, Psychology, Mathematics, etc.
7. Therefore, the Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist
should have the characteristic of being analytical, independent yet
collaborative in the work, research-oriented, people-centered and
above all, with the heart and mind to serve people and to serve God,
people being created in the image and likeness of God. Therefore,
no harm or danger should be inflicted on the patient or client.
8. Medical Technology is a science and an art. As a science, it is based
on principles that have passed the test of time. These principles can
change because of new discoveries. As an art, there is a way to
do things; showing the dexterity of the hands of the performer in
delivering the service, a personality that promotes care, compassion,
empathy, because the patient is the center of the work of a med-tech.
Case 1: On Punctuality
You are having pain in your stomach after dinner. By 10:00 p.m. you can no
longer bear the pain so your parents decided to bring you to the hospital. You
were brought to the Emergency Room and the physician ordered the
laboratory to send a medical technologist to collect blood sample for Complete
Blood Count and Differential Count.
Abdominal x-ray was also requested. The med-tech did not come to the E.R. in
30 minutes because she is late for night duty. So you have to stay at the E.R.
until 11:30 p.m and bear the pain.
Questions:
1. How do you feel about the situation? You dream to become a medical
laboratory scientist to serve people. Do you think tardiness will help you
in your dream of becoming an efficient professional?

(Golden Rule: Do unto others as you want others done unto you.)
Republic Act No. 005527 – An Act Requiring the Registration of Medical
Technologists, Defining Their Practice, and for Other Purposes.
Qualifications for Examination to Become a Medical Technologist: (Sec. 16,17,19)
1. Is in good health and is of good moral character.
2. Graduated from either BS Medical Technology, BS Public Health or BS Hygiene
Today, graduates of BMLS are also allowed to take the board examination.
3. Scope and Coverage of Examination:
*Clinical Chemistry ……………….20% *Blood Banking & Serology ………20%
*Microbiology & Parasitology..20% Clinical Microscopy …………………10%
*Hematology ………………………..20% Histopath & MT Laws & Ethics…10%
4. To pass the Board Exam, the examinee should get a weighted average of 75.0
with no rating below 50% in the major subjects (*). Those who get a weighted
average of 70.0-74.9 can get a certificate as Medical Laboratory Technician.
iefly answer the following questions in your own words and send your
swers as an attachment of your e-mail to me. This is an individual activity.
nyone found copying will be deducted 20 pts. Your e-mail should be sent
thin 4 hours from the time I send the lesson.
