So start BLS Immediately
Brain damage starts in 4-6
minutes of cardiac arrest
is certain after 10 minutes
without CPR
Objectives of this presentation..
What is cardiac Arrest ?[is Heart attack is same ]

Define the Pneumonic of Basic Life Support

Identify the Basic Concepts of high quality CPR

Identify the chain of survival in Adult

Chocking
History

BLS contd..
BASIC LIFE SUPPORT

It is defined as life support without

the use of special equipments
BLS

Verify the scene

1

•Victim is unresponsive
•Shout for help
•Activate Emergency response system 2
[Code blue]
•Get AED /Defibrillator

 Breathing / agonal
 Check pulse [ 10 sec ] 3

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
the manual application of
1, chest compressions and
2, opening of Airway
3, breathing to patients who is in
CARDIAC ARREST
• Place the heel of one hand in the
centre of the chest
• Place other hand on top
• Interlock fingers
• Compress the chest
– Rate 100 -120 min-1
– compression within 10 sec
– Depth 2inches (5-6 cm)
– Equal compression : relaxation
– Minimize interruption between
compression
– Avoid excessive ventilation

Choking
Choking is one of the problems where

active BLS is needed

Vomit

Foreign body

Spasm (water is inhaled suddenly)

HEIMLICH MANEUVER
Only in Conscious
patient
Give 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich
maneuver)
Place fist just above the
umbilicus
Give 5 upward and inward thrusts
Pregnant or obese? 5 chest thrusts
 Fists on sternum
 If unsuccessful, support chest with one hand and

give back blows with the other

Continue until successful or victim
becomes unconscious
CHOKING INFANTS
Only in Conscious patient
Position with head
downward
5 back blows (check for
expelled object)
5 chest thrusts (check for
expelled object)
Repeat
WHEN CAN I STOP CPR
 Victim revives

 Trained helper / code blue team

arrives
 Unsafe scene

 Cardiac arrest of longer than 20 mins
