CHAPTER 10

THE NANO WORLD

01
What is Nano?
NANOTECHNOLOGY

Nano - is an SI prefix which comes from the

Greek word for dwarf – “nanos”

- the branch of technology that deals with

dimensions and tolerances of less than 100
nanometers, especially the manipulation of
individual atoms and molecules.
How Nanotechnology started:
“Plenty of Room at the Bottom”
An invitation to enter a new field of
physics

- Is the annual meeting led by physicist Richard Feyman at

the American Physical Society at the California Institute of
Technology in December 29, 1959.
Norio Taniguchi

- The one who coined the term

for the process of manipulating
atoms and molecule as
“Nanotechnology”
The Emergence of Nanotechnology in 1980

Engines of Creation

- Book written by Kim Eric Drexler in the year 1986

- The emergence of Nanotechnology as field in the

1980s occurred through convergence of Dexler’s
theoretical and public work.
02
Nanoworld
in Science and
Technology
What is Nanotechnology?
- are the study and application of extremely small things and
can be used across all the other science fields, such as
chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and
engineering.

Involve the ability to see and control individual atoms and

molecules. Everything on Earth made up of atoms- the food
we eat, the clothes we wear, the buildings and houses we live
in, and our own bodies.
- Although modern nanoscience and nanotechnology
are quite new, nanoscale materials were used for
centuries. Alternate-sized gold and silver particles
created colors in the stained-glass windows of medieval
churches hundreds of years ago.

- The artists back then just didn’t know that the process
they used to create these beautiful works of art actually
led to changes in the composition of the materials they
were working.

- Today’s scientists and engineers are finding a wide

variety of ways to deliberately make materials at the
nanoscale to take advantage of their enhanced
properties such as higher strength, lighter weight,
increased control of light spectrum, and greater
chemical reactivity than their larger-scale counterparts.

How does Nanotechno-logy
affects our society and
environment
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

2 ASPECTS:

1. Potential for nanotechnological innovations to help

improve the environment.

2. Possibly novel type of pollution that nanotechnological

materials might cause if released into the environment.
ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATION
1. Use of nanotechnology to enhance sustainability.

2. Minimizes potential environmental and human health risks

associated with manufacture and use of nanotechnology products,
and to encourage replacement of existing products that are more
environmentally friendly throughout their lifecycle.
Nanopollution
- Is a generic name for all waste generated by
nanodevices or during nanomaterials manufacturing
process.

- Nanowaste is mainly the group of particles that are

released into the environment, or the particles that
are thrown away when still on their products
SOCIETAL IMPACT
MILITARY APPLICATIONS

- The advancement of nanotechnology might contribute to terrorism

as it can exacerbate existing trends towards asymmetric warfare.

- The enhancement of military application in nanotechnology may

thus indirectly increase the occurrence of terrorist attacks in the
future.
EFFECT ON EMPLOYMENT
- During the improvement of nanotechnology, firms are likely
to have high demands for the scientists, engineers, and
technicians who have to build and integrate the new ideas
into processes and products. In addition, there is a need for
supporting labor services, which creates career opportunities.

- Nanotechnology is likely to have even less impact on labor

market inequalities. This is because most of not need literate
in nanotechnological anymore than we are literate about
computer circuit design
THE BALANCE BETWEEN CITIZENS AND
GOVERNMENTS

- The improvements in the field of electronics and computer memory

that nanotechnology makes possible capacity of government to
collect, store, and examine data. Developments in nanotechnology,
can therefore, be expected to increase significantly the ability of
governments to keep track of their citizens.
04
Ways on how Nanotechno-
logy impact our lives
1. Faster
and more powerful computers,
which consume less power.
Modern computers have longer-lasting
batteries.

2. People get access, much faster, more

accurate, and functional medical diagnostic
equipment.
3. Modern sunscreens, which absorb light more
efficiently.

4. Water filters are able to remove the bacterias.

5. Carbon nanotubes make our sports
equipment stronger and the weight of it
lighter.

6. Solar panels to convert sunlight to

electricity.
7. Nanotechnology helps to
improve the automotive industry.

8. Nanotechnology in the food

industry.
05

Benefits and application of

Nanotechno-logy
After more than 20 years of basic nanoscience
research and more than fifteen years of focused
R&D under the NNI, application of nanotechnology
are delivering in both expected and unexpected
ways on nanotechnology’s promise to benefit
society.
APPLICATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY

MEDICINE

- Stem cell differentiation

- Artificial DNA
- Chemotherapy
- Destroy cancer cells without damaging the host cells
- Silicon, gelatin nanoparticles, gold and silver
- Vaccine, oral- enzyme preventing reproduction of viruses
- Graphene – computer contact lens due to transparency, cancer
marker, and wound healing
ELECTRONICS

- Flexible mobiles
- Sensitive touch – detect even 1 atom.
