PUSH IT!
A child on a swing is pushed by his father until the swing reached a
maximum height of 4 feet. Then, the father released the swing and observed that
the maximum height reached by the swing decreases by 15% on each
successive swing.
1. If the swing is pushed once by the father, what will be the height reached on
the third swing? on the fourth swing? on the sixth swing?
2. Complete the table of values to present the answers to the questions in item 1.

Swing 1: Height = 4 feet Swing 5: a5 = a4 – (a4 x 0.15) r =
a5 = 2.4565 – (2.4565 x 0.15)
Swing 2: a2 = a1 – (a1 x 0.15) r = r=
a5 = 2.4565 – 0.368475
a2 = 4 – (4 x 0.15) r= a5 = 2.089 r = 0.85
a2 = 4 – 0.6
a2 = 3.4 r = 0.85
Swing 6: a6 = a5 – (a5 x 0.15) r =
Swing 3: a3 = a2 – (a2 x 0.15) r = a6 = 2.089 – (2.089 x 0.15)
a3 = 3.4 – (3.4 x 0.15) r=
r= a6 = 2.089 – 0.31335
a3 = 3.4 – 0.51 a6 = 1.77565
r = 0.85
a3 = 2.89 r = 0.85
r = 0.85
