Basic Electricity
• Enumerate the different types of electricity (MELC- SSP_TLE-
CT9BE-Ia-1.1);
• Recognize the common electrical conductors and insulators and their
uses (MELC- SSP_TLE-CT9BE -Ia-1.4); and
• Identify the different materials and components used in electronics
(MELCSSP_TLE-CT9BE -Ic-3.1)
Atoms • Nucleus - small, dense region consisting of protons and
neutrons at the center of an atom, discovered in 1911 by Ernest
Rutherford
• Protons - a stable subatomic particle occurring in all atomic
nuclei, with a positive electric charge equal in magnitude to that
of an electron, but of opposite sign
• Neutrons - a subatomic particle of about the same mass as a
proton but without an electric charge, present in all atomic
nuclei except those of ordinary hydrogen.
• Electrons - a stable subatomic particle with a charge of
negative electricity, found in all atoms and acting as the primary
carrier of electricity in solids.
• Protons (+)
• Electrons (-)
electricity is the flow of electrical power or
charge

• static electricity - charged particles gather

• current - ordered flow of charged particles and

often flows through a wire
Insulators
Conductors
Resistors
Insulators
• any material that does not allow electric
current to pass through it
Conductors
• any material that allows electric current
to pass through it
Resistors
• material or a device that allows some
current to pass but converts some of the
current to another form of energy
Electrical Components
• Resistor
• Capacitor
• Diodes
• Variable resistor / Potentiometer
• Transistors
• Integrated circuit
• Printed Circuit Board
Resistor
• impedes the flow of
electricity through
a circuit and have a
set value
Capacitor
• store energy when
an electric charge is
forced onto its
plates from a power
source
Diodes
• a one way valve (or
gate) for electricity
Variable resistor/ Potentiometer
• a variable resistor
Transistors
• a semiconductor
device used to
amplify and switch
electronic signals
and electrical
power
Integrated circuit
• a set of transistors
that is the
controller or
‘brain’ of an
electronic circuit
Printed Circuit Board
• Is where components are attached to
