SYSTEMS
THE EARTH SUBSYSTEMS
EARTH SUBSYSTEMS
Content Standards Key Concepts
The learners demonstate an understanding of: a. Closed System
a. the subsystem (geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere) b.Geosphere
that make up the Earth and c. Hydrosphere
b. the Earth’s internal structure d.Atmosphere
Performance Standards e. Biosphere
The learners shall be able to make a poster showing the four
subsystems of the Earth
Learning Competencies
The learners should be able to:
a. explain that the earth consists of four subsystems, across whose boundaries matter and
energy flow
b. explain on the current advancement/ information in the solar system
c. show the contributions of the personalities/people on the understanding on the earth

EARTH SUBSYSTEMS
System- a set of
EXPLAIN interconnected components
that are interacting to form a
unified whole.

Earth system is a closed

system. It receives energy
from the sun and returns
some of this energy to
space.

EXPLAIN

ATMOSPHERE
 It is a thin gaseous layer that envelopes the lithosphere.
 The present atmosphere is composed of 78% nitrogen, 21%
oxygen, 0.9% argon, and trace amount of other gases.
 There is also a constant exchange of heat and moisture between the
atmosphere and the hydrosphere through the hydrologic cycle.

EXPLAIN
The four layers of the atmosphere are:
1. Troposphere- layer where we live.
2. Stratosphere- layer which
contains the ozone layer.
3. Mesosphere- layer where meteors
burn.
4. Thermosphere-layer where
satellites orbit Earth.

LITHOSPHERE
 The lithosphere includes the rocks of the crust and
mantle, the metallic liquid outer core, and the solid
metallic inner core.
 It is a solid Earth
 Extends from surface to the center of planet.
 It is the largest among the four Earth’s spheres.

HYDROSPHERE
 Ocean is the most prominent feature of the hydrosphere.
 About 70% of the earth is covered with liquid water (hydrosphere)
and much of it is in the form of ocean water.
 Only 3% of Earth’s water is fresh: two-thirds are in the form
of ice, and the remaining one-third is present in streams, lakes,
and groundwater.
EARTH SUBSYSTEMS
EXPLAIN

BIOSPHERE
 The biosphere is the set of all life forms on Earth.
 It covers all ecosystems- from the soil to the rainforest,
from mangroves to coral reefs, and from the plankton-
rich ocean surface to the deep sea.
