Introduction 8

 The growing environmental concern of air quality around the

world has created a move to green sources of energy such as wind
and solar which provide a pollution-free electricity.

 Development of techniques for accurately assessing the wind power

potential of site is gaining increased importance. This is due to fact that
the planning and establishment of wind energy system depends upon
factors like

1. Variation of wind speed distribution

2. Characteristic speeds of turbine viz. cut-in velocity(Vc),cut-out
velocity(Vf),rated velocity(Vr) and hub height.

 Once the details of wind resource is known for potential wind power
site, efficient wind energy system demands optimum matching of wind
turbine to the site to obtain higher plant factor.

Artificial neural network 16
Network architecture
 The manner in which the neurons of a neural
network are structured is initially linked with the
learning algorithm used to train the network. Thus
the learning algorithm (rules) used in the design of
neural network are being structured.
 In general there are four different class of
architecture.
1.Single layer feed forward networks.
2.Multilayer feed forward networks.
3.Recurrent networks.
4.Lattice structures. 17

Learning process
 Learning is a process by which the free parameters of a
neural network are adapted through a continuing process
of stimulation by the environment in which the network is
embedded.
 This definition of learning process implies the following
sequence of events
1.The neural network is stimulated by an environment.
2.The neural network undergoes changes as a result of this
stimulation.
3.The neural network responds new way to the
environment, because of the changes that have occurred
in its internal structure.

Training of ANN
Objective Of Training`

 A Network is trained so that application of a set

of inputs produces the desired set of outputs.
 Training is accomplished by sequentially
applying input vectors, which adjusting network
weight according to a pre determined
procedure.
There are two types of training:-
1.Supervised Training
2.Unsupervised Training

 Land Preservation: Wind farms are spaced over 33

a large geographic area, but their actual "footprint"

covers only a small portion of the land resulting in
a minimum impact on crop production or livestock
grazing. Large buildings cannot be built near the
turbine, thus wind farms preserve open space.
 Clean Water: Turbines produce no
particulate emissions that contribute to
mercury contamination in our lakes and
streams. Wind energy also conserves water
resources. For example, producing the same
amount of electricity can take about 600
times more water with nuclear power than
wind, and about 500 times more water with
coal than wind.
