What is Glitch?

• Glitch is a sub-genre of Electronic

music.

• It started to evolve from the genres of

Breakbeat, Techno and Vapourwave
in the late 90’s onwards.
• The sub-genre is said to have
cultured from the UK and Japan.

(Generally most glitch songs start from a

minimum of 110bpm upwards)
History of Glitch
• It is unknown of who originally created Glitch music,
although Japanese sound experimenter Yasuano Tone
began testing and manipulating CD tracks to create
uniquely mangled sound effects in the late 1980’s.

• He does this by using damaged audio and extracting those

sounds over the top of original songs to create some level
of distortion.

• What he does as a musician though  is convert molecular

music which isused  to relate specific musical effects such
as volume and pitch  with the structure to create
sounds along with the damaged CD's which is why his
work sounds distorted and glitchy.
Glitch with Retro
From childhood, Yuzo Koshiro has worked
with  music composition  and his
soundtracks.

While he was still in high school during

the early 1980s he  began creating music
on the NEC PC-8801 creating his own
arcade music  later for Sega as being
president of their music industry, onece he
got into creating chiptune soundtradcks.

All of these early soundtracks were produced using the FM synthesis
sound chip of the PC-8801. Despite later advances in audio technology,
Koshiro would continue to use older PC-8801 hardware to produce
many of his later video game soundtracks, including the Streets of Rage
and Etrian Odyssey soundtracks.

Sega was the soundtrack to The Revenge of Shinobi (1989), in which he

produced techno and breakbeat style  compositions with Glitchy
distortions which he realised worked well with sound machines and
arcade machines.

Goririllaz The prodigy Daft Punk

Daft Punk

Daft punk is an electronic music duo, that formed in Paris,

France starting in 1993; being heavily influenced by existing
DJ's of the time and because of the duos same taste in musical
styles and preformers.

Their popularity has grown massively since the late 90’s with
their songs such as Da funk, Around the world and into silver
club which became a massive success esspecially because of
their obession to detail with the way their audio sounds and
feels.

Their songs are made up of a combination of sub-genres such

as, future house, glitch, techno and synthpop which are
common other genres that Daft Punk had  experience of
making.

they have worn ornate helmets and gloves to assume robot-

like personas with their iconicity   in most public appearances
since 1999 and rarely grant interviews or appear on television.
In 1992, Laurent and Thomas  formed a French rock band known as
Darlin , just at the age of 17,  taken from the name of one of the beach boys songs.
Their early music being based on  DJ sneak, and they first headed out to  the  De La
Viande Pour Le Disco to preform their  first two songs.

later after someone mentioned that their  music was a ‘daft funky trash’ that they
decided to form  what is today known as Daft Punk.
In 1994 after Darlin was de-banded, they began working with electronic music, and
began experimenting with drum machines and synthesizers specifically on the TR-909.

Though the Rolands drum machine was expensive at the time, it was the first drum
machine to have proper MIDI, so the duo used those new synths knowing that these
sounds would develop towards the era of electronic music.

In an interview, daft punk described this equipment as sounding 'aggressive and punchy'.
Thanks to its pre-samples and analogs, they managed to produce their first EDM song
called ‘da funk’ produced in 1996, then released in 1997 by virgin records.
Daft punk’s first gigs where set in France in what today is a
well-known French nightclub and even at euro Disney,
which is today known as Disneyland Paris.

These first songs where only heard in nightclubs before

they even started going on tour, and not long after, they
became recommended by a record studio
With Soma Quality sounds in order for them to have
ongoing  releases.

Aphex Twin The Glitch mob Deadmu5 Ooah Flying Lotus

The glitch mob
• The glitch mob started in America as an
electronic group originating from Los Angles
which started in 2006.
• What once begun as a trio created by Justin
Borreta and Josh Mayer, The Glitch Mob
became a starting influence of electronica,
techno and heavy bass to form glitchy and
bleepy-scuttered music for their beginning
mixtapes such as ‘Bad wings’ and ‘Animous
Vox”.
• These DJ's eventually found partnership with
each other from meeting at music venues, and
as they all tended to use the same Equipment
such as laptops and MIDI controllers, Glitch
Mob began adding/recalling more members to
their team such as Ooah and Flying Lotus for
the reason that they had modern ideas in
development.
Gigs, concerts and venues
The Lightning in a bottle music festival and
the Noisily festival has been a popular by
their household title from way back in 2007.
Each of the following group artists started as
a line-up back then at the time of
discovering their sounds and audience.  After
moving the gigs from
California(U.S.A)to Leicestershire, United
Kingdom they then moved to London
festivals such as Village underground.

The design, lighting and staging
Inspired by legendary DJ Deadmu5, the sci-fi
atmospheric design is specifically designed by
professionals for the purpose of almost telling a
story for an audience. Therefore the stage design
mimics the overall disirement and feeling of a
futuristic event.
Music technology
and techniques
The glitch mob use touchscreens, drum-pads
and software plugins to a high standard when
preforming to elaborate their audience.  After
noticing that by having their gear shown to
the auidience rather than the viewers just
seeing the back of their laptops.

Why glitch created its importance into the electronic era
Glitch has the importance of developing  new skills and ideas especially
when simulating and distorting because of how the artists adjust &
modify their equipment and samples in order to produce those ire-
cognisable sounds. Initially glitch was made to experiment with samples
so that they could construct something new in music and then show it to
an audience. Traditionally it was more of a technique rather than a sub-
genre focused more on remixing other EDM styles of techno and trance
which consist of a high BPM, which juxtaposes the speed of those
songs. Artists though that came from other music backgrounds though
added their own synthesisers to create recently new reverbs & melodies
which is why I think  the composition of glitch music is influential in a
way it inspires the audience from the artists creativity.
