Origin and
Nature of the
Church
Psalm 84:

How lovely your dwelling, O Lord of hosts!

My soul yearns and pines for the courts of the Lord.
My heart and flesh cry out or the living God.
My home is by your altars, Lord of hosts,
my king and my God!
Blessed are those who dwell in your house!
They never cease to praise you.
Better one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere.
Better the threshold of the house of my God
than a home in the tents of the wicked.
Loving and Generous God,
it is You who call us by name and ask us to follow You.
Help us to grow in the Love and Service of our Church
as we experience it today.
Give us the energy and courage of Your Spirit to shape its future.
Grant us faith-filled leaders
who will embrace Christ's Mission of love and justice.
Bless the Church by raising up dedicated and generous leaders from our
families and friends who will serve Your people as Sisters, Priests,
Brothers, Deacons and Lay Ministers.
Inspire us to know You better and open our hearts to hear Your call.
We ask this through our Lord. Amen.

THE NATURE OF THE CHURCH

Our Catholic Church traces its origin back to the Old Testament “qahal” and the New Testament “ekklesia”. Both terms mean “the
people of God called together,” or an “assembly convoked by God” (CCC 751).

The Church is a faith assembly – composed of people who believed in God.
