Fire protection

systems control and

extinguish fires without human intervention.

A fire sprinkler system is an active fire protection

measure, consisting of a water supply system, providing
adequate pressure and flowrate to a water distribution
piping system, onto which fire sprinklers and fire hose
are connected.

Fire protection system is not connected to FDAS. The

only part of fire protection system that have a direct link
to FDAS is the flow sensor
EXIT
FLOAT VALVE / BALL
An automatic valve whose opening and closing
are controlled by a float at the end of a wire or
lever

BACK
ISOLATION VALVE
It is a valve  in a system that stops the flow
of water to a given location, usually
for maintenance or safety purposes.

BACK
FIRE PUMP
It is a part of a fire protection system. The pump
intake is connected to the fire tank. The pump
provides water flow at a higher pressure to the
sprinkler system risers and hose standpipes.
FIRE PUMP

Example of burnt fire pump due to lack of
water in the fire tank.

BACK
FIRE TANK
A water reservoir intended for the event of a
fire.

BACK
JOCKEY PUMP
It is a small apparatus that works together with a fire
pump as part of a fire-protection system. It is designed
to keep the pressure in the system elevated to a specific
level when the system is not in use, so that the fire
pump doesn't have to run all the time.

BACK
GATE VALVE
A valve that either allows or prohibits the flow
of hydraulic fluid. The gate valve consists of a
plate-like obstruction that is raised and lowered
into place to control the flow of hydraulic fluid.

BACK
FLEXIBLE CONNECTOR
It provides for misalignment of the shafts or to
introduce mechanical flexibility and to alter the
vibration characteristics of the motor.
FLEXIBLE CONNECTOR
Damage flexible connector can cause harm to
your pump.
Also it can cause flooding in the pump room.

BACK
CHECK VALVE
It is a valve that normally allows fluid or gas to
flow through it in only one direction.

BACK
PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE
It is a valve designed to open at a
predetermined pressure value.

BACK
ALARM CHECK VALVE
A check valve located in the riser of fire
protection system that sounds an alarm when
water begins to pass through it.

BACK
SPRINKLER HEAD
An outlet on a sprinkler system which covers a
radius of 3m. Each sprinkler head must have a
maximum distance of 6m with each other.
SPRINKLER PRESSURE HEAD

Rule of thumb:
1m=1.39psi

Formula:
Pressure=height(1.39)+60psi

Note:
60psi is the standard pressure inside the
sprinkler system.
BACK
CROSS MAIN VALVE
It is a valve that normally allows or restrict fluid
or gas to flow

BACK
SUPERVISORY and FLOW SWITCH
The function of a water flow switch is to detect
water flow in the sprinkler system, usually
during a fire event, to send a signal to FDAS to
activate the alarm devices in the property

BACK
SIGHT GLASS
A sight glass or water gauge is a transparent tube
through which the operator of a tank can observe
the level of liquid contained within.

BACK
DRAIN VALVE
A drain valve is a mechanical device used to
release excess or unwanted liquids from the pipe
line.

STEP 1

Check and double check the fire pump

system and everything surrounding it
before doing anything else.
• Fire pump and motor
• Control Panel
• Piping system
• Fire Water
• Never test equipments without the
knowledge of others.
STEP 2
Open the BY-PASS VALVE. This valve is
channeled back to the fire tank.

STEP 3
Close the MAIN ISOLATION VALVE. This
valve is located at the alarm check valve.

• Observe the motor for over-heating.
• Observe excessive heating of pump shaft,

Make sure that CUT-IN and CUT-OFF PRESSURE of

pressure actuated equipments like fire and jockey
pump, PRV’s and booster pump.
STEP 6
To test PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE,
gradually close the by-pass valve until water
passes through the PRV, observe the trip
pressure if it is same with the set pressure
posted on the PRV. Adjust if necessary .

SAFETY REMINDERS

PRV discharge pipe should be back to

tank, if ever your PRV discharge is
directed to sump pit, discharge volume of
PRV will SURELY flood your pump room
of sump pit. Consider re-directing PRV
discharge back to tank.
STEP 7
Shut-down the fire pump by pressing the
STOP BUTTON at the control panel after 10
minutes.
STEP 8
Close BY-PASS VALVE and re-open the
MAIN ISOLATING VALVE to put the system
in service.
STEP 9
Record parameters and test results at FIRE
PUMP PM CHECKLIST.
