They use five different themes, or ways of thinking, to help answer them.
Geography’s Five Themes
The theme of place covers the mix of human and nonhuman features at a given location
Human-environment interaction: It concerns how people affect their environment, or their natural
surroundings. It is also about how that environment affects them.
The theme of movement looks at how and why people, goods, and ideas move from one place to
another.
The theme of region groups places that have something in common.
How Do Geographers Show Earth’s Surface?
GLOBES : is a model of Earth that is round, like Earth. Globes can show the land and water features of Earth.
Photographs :Geographers study images Earth’s surface. Some are photographs taken from the air. Others are
images taken by satellites. They can show Earth’s surface in great detail.
GIS : A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based system. It store and uses information about a
place or area.
GPS: uses signals from satellites to determine the user's location and give directions to other places
Digital maps: stored in electronic equipment like a computer. They can be used to show many different kinds of
information.
Understanding Maps
Digital and paper maps are flat, but Earth is round. Showing even part of
Earth on a flat map always creates some distortion. That is, the size or
position of objects is not fully accurate. Mapmakers can choose among
different projections. These are ways to show Earth on a flat surface. Each
projection has some kind of distortion.
Maps may have features that help users understand them. A key explains the meaning of the map’s symbols and
colors. A locator map shows where the area on the map is located in a larger area. A scale bar shows how much
space on the map stands for a given distance on Earth. Maps may have a grid with lines of longitude and latitude.
A compass rose shows the cardinal directions.
Political maps show countries or states. They may also show capitals of countries and other cities. A physical map
shows the physical features of a place. They often use color to show elevation, or height above sea level. Special-
purpose maps show different human or physical features.
