WHAT IS BIOSHERE RESERVE
…….
Biosphere – Part of earth in which living
organism exist or that support life is known
as biosphere.

Biosphere Reserve – Are the protected areas


meant for the conservation of the plants and
animals. It also restore the traditional life in
that vicinity. They conserve the bio diversity
of the area.
Three zones of Biosphere Reserve
• CORE

•BUFFER

•TRANSITION
Three zones of Biosphere….

• Core Area – This is legally protected area where human


intervention is strictly prohibited. It is innermost undistributed
ecosystem.

• Buffer Zone - This area is surrounding the core zone. Here


only the research and educational activities are permitted to
humans. This areas also includes activities that help to
manage natural vegetation, agriculture land, fisheries and
forests to enhance the quality of production

• Transition Zone - It is the peripheral area of a biosphere


reserve where human activities like cropping, recreation,
forestry, and settlements are permitted.

18 Biosphere Reserve in India…
The Indian government has established 18 biosphere
reserves to protect larger areas of natural habitat than a
typical national park or animal sanctuary, and that
often include one or more national parks or reserves,
along with buffer zones that are open to some
economic uses. Protection is granted not only to the
flora and fauna of the protected region, but also to the
human communities who inhabit these regions, and
their ways of life. Total there are 18 biosphere reserves
in India

Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve
The Nilgiri Biosphere
Reserve was the first
biosphere reserve in India
established in the year 1986.
It is located in the Western
Ghats and includes 2 of the
10 bio geographical
provinces of India. Wide
ranges of ecosystems and
species diversity are found
in this region. Thus, it was a
natural choice for the
premier biosphere reserve
of  the country.
Largest Biosphere Reserve in India:
The Gulf of Kuchchh
• The Great Rann of Kutch is a salt marsh in the Thar
Desert in the Kutch District of Gujarat. It is about
7500 km2 in area and is reputed to be one of the largest
salt deserts in the world. This area has been inhabited
by the Kutchi people. This area is known to be a
breeding ground for flamingoes and staging ground for
pelicans, cranes, storks and many species of waterfowl.
It is also an important site for animals like blue bull,
chinkara and desert wolf, which have been sighted over
here regularly. There are 5 National Parks and Wildlife
Sanctuaries in Rann of Kutch.

• The Wild Ass Sanctuary is the only place on the earth


where the endangered Indian Wild Ass still exists.
Smallest Biosphere Reserve in India:
Dibru-Saikhowa
Dibru-Saikhowa is the smallest Biosphere
Reserve, designated a Biosphere Reserve in
July 1997 with an area of 765 km2 including a
core area of 340 km2 and a buffer zone of 425
km2.

The sprawling Dibru Saikhowa National Park,


spread over an area of 650sq km, is located
close to the eastern border of Assam, straddling
both the districts of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. An
identified Important Bird Area (IBA), it is most
famous for the rare white-winged wood ducks
as well as feral horses.
