INTRODUCTION
 Microstrip patch antenna consists of radiating
metallic (gold , copper, silver) patch on one
side of the dielectric substrate and has a
ground plane on the other side.
 They are narrowband, wide beam antenna and
compact antennas.
 They are widely used in microwave frequency
range.
OBJECTIVE
To study the microstrip patch antenna.
To design and analyze the performance of

‘A’ shape slotted microstrip antenna in
terms of return loss, directivity, gain,
radiation pattern.
“LITERATURE REVIEW”
Chen et al. (2004) presented broadband suspended
plate antenna which is fed by double L-shaped
strips.They use electromagnetic coupling for the
broad impedance bandwidth.
Srifi et al. (2010) discussed the design of a novel
miniature wideband rectangular patch antenna for
wireless local area network (WLANs) applications
and operating for 5-6 GHz ISM band, and wideband
applications.
“LITERATURE REVIEW”
Surjati et al. (2010) presented a bandwidth
enhancement using array technique. The maximum
bandwidth can be achieved by controlling the distance
between the two patch antennas and by adjusting the
length of the transmission feed line 50 Ohm
Rathore et al. (2012) they proposed a newly design
technique for enhancing Bandwidth that improves the
performance of a conventional micro strip patch
antenna.

METHODS
MICROSTRIP ANTENNA
 Micro strip patch antenna is a key building in wireless
communication and Global Positioning system since it
was first demonstrate in 1886 by Heinrich Hertz .
 Patch antennas are planar antennas used in wireless

links and other microwave applications.
 Light weight, low profile, low production cost,

reliability and ease in fabrication
FEEDING TECHNIQUE
 The selection of feeding technique is
evaluated by the efficient power transfer
between the radiating structure and the feed
that means the impedance matching between
the two.
 There are two techniques for feeding
contacting feed and non contacting feed.
INSET FEED
• It is the contacting feed technique.
• It is a type of micro strip line feeding
technique, in which the width of conducting
strip is small as compared to the patch and has
the advantage that the feed can provide a
planar structure
• This type of feed technique is used in our
work.
PROPOSED DESIGN
• In this paper A shape slot is made in
rectangular patch antenna whose dimension
are given in the table.

• The operating frequency is 5.5 GHz.

RESULT AND
DISCUSSION
RETURN LOSS
• Return loss measures the mismatching between transmitter
and receiver. It is the logarithm ratio of reflected power to the
transmitted power measured.
• This is dual band returnloss.
GAIN
• The gain of an antenna in a given direction is
the amount of energy radiated in that direction
compared to the energy an isotropic antenna
would radiate in the same direction when
driven with the same input power.
• Gain is always seen at that frequency at which
the return loss has been evaluated.

DIRECTIVITY
• Directivity is an ability of an antenna to focus energy in a
particular direction while transmitting and receiving.
RELATION BETWEEN GAIN
AND DIRECTIVITY
 As a transmitting antenna, the gain describes how well
the antenna converts input power into radio waves headed
in a specified direction. As a receiving antenna, the gain
describes how well the antenna converts radio waves
arriving from a specified direction into electrical power.
 The directivity is therefore the maximum directive gain

when taken over all directions, and is always at least 1

RADIATION PATTERN
• A graphical representation of the relative
distribution of the radiated power in space is
called a radiation pattern.
• As there is dual band graph in the return loss

so there will be two radiation patterns at two
different frequencies.

GHz.
CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION
•It is easily concluded from the above result that the gain of
antenna is increased up to 8 db and the size of antenna gets
reduced.
•The return loss is decreased by forming the double band which
is better in the area of antenna design. The directivity is
increased and the maximum output is achieved.
