Lesson 2

Addition of Integers
Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learner should be able to

● accurately add integers with the same signs;

● accurately add integers with different signs; and

● correctly solve real-life problems involving the

addition of integers.
Essential Questions

● How will you find the sum of integers with the same sign
and different signs?

● How will you solve real-life problems involving signed

integers?
Warm Up!

Before we start with our lesson, work on the following

worksheet with a partner.

Guide Questions

● How do you define a positive integer?

● How do you define a negative integer?

● How do you add integers?

Learn about It!

Integers
1 the combination of the set of whole numbers and the negative counterparts of
natural numbers

Example:
Learn about It!

Positive integers
2 integers greater than zero

Example:

Negative integers
3 integers less than zero

4 Zero
integer that is neither positive nor negative

When illustrated using a number line, positive integers are

found to the right of zero, and negative integers are found to
the left of zero.

Addition of Integers with the Same Sign

5 to add integers with the same sign, add their absolute values and affix the
common sign to the sum

Example:

The sum of and is .

Addition of Integers with Different Signs

6 to add integers with different signs, find their absolute value, subtract the smaller
absolute value from the larger absolute value, and affix the sign of the integer
with the larger absolute value

Example:

The sum of and is .

Example 1: Find the sum of and .

Try It!

Example 1: Find the sum of and .

Solution:
1. Find the absolute values of the addends.

Try It!

2. Since the addends have the same sign, add the absolute
values.

3. Affix the common sign to the sum.

Therefore, .

Example 2: Find the sum of and .

Try It!

Example 2: Find the sum of and .

Solution:
1. Find the absolute values of the addends.

Try It!

2. Subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger

absolute value.

3. Affix the sign of the integer with the larger absolute value.

The integer with the larger absolute value is . Its sign is

negative. Therefore, .
Let’s Practice!

Individual Practice:

1. A basketball team lost 5 games in the elimination round

and lost 2 games in the quarterfinals. How many games in
total were lost by the team? Illustrate the situation as
addition of integers, then solve.

2. Rose parked her car on Basement 3, which is three floors

down from the ground floor. She rode the elevator and
went nine floors up. On what floor did Rose go off the
elevator?
Let’s Practice!

Group Practice: To be done in groups of three

A team of marine biologists went aboard an underwater

vessel to do research. The vessel descends 1000 feet beneath
the surface of the water. Then, they rise 300 feet before
descending again by 520 feet. What is the current position of
the vessel?

Synthesis

● How do you solve for the sum of integers with the same
sign or different signs?

● In what situations can you see the application of finding

the sum of signed integers?

● Now that you have learned how to find the sum of signed
integers, can you do the same with finding their
difference?
