End Feel

End feel refers to the sensation felt by the examiner at the end of the range of motion during passive movement testing. A soft end feel indicates compression of soft tissues like muscles, a firm end feel indicates muscular stretch, and a hard end feel is an unyielding sensation within the joint capsule. Care must be taken when assessing end feel to avoid provoking severe pain in patients with limitations at the end of range.

of each passive movement

• the sensation the examiner “feels” in the joint as

it reaches the end of the ROM
Precaution
• Care must be taken when testing end feel, however,
to be sure that severe symptoms are not provoked

• The patient has severe pain at end range, end feel

NOTE: Cyriax, Kaltenborn, and Paris have

described a variety of types of normal (physiological)
and abnormal (pathological) end-feels.
Normal End Feel
Soft End Feel

Calf

hamstring

This type of end feel, there is a yielding compression (mushy feel)

that stops further movement. Examples are elbow and knee
flexion, in which movement is stopped by compression of the soft
tissues, primarily the muscles.
Firm :muscular stretch

Muscular
stretch (firm
end feel)
Firm: Capsular stretch
Hard End Feel

This is a “hard,”
