LUNAR ECLIPSE
After going through
this module, you are
expected to explain
how solar and lunar
eclipses occur using
models. (S7ES-IVj-12)
Specifically, you are also
expected to:
A. First quarter
B. Full moon
C. Last quarter
D. New moon
5. What do you call the
darkest part of the moon’s
shadow?
A. Eclipse
B. Lunar eclipse
C. Penumbra
D. Umbra
Solar eclipse happens when
the sun, the moon and the
Earth are aligned and blocked
the sunlight from reaching the
Earth. It will only take place at
the phase of the new moon and
will occur if the two ecliptic
nodes meet.
Two distinct parts of the Earth’s
shadow during a solar eclipse:
1. Umbra – refers to the darkest
part of the moon’s shadow formed
on the Earth where a total solar
eclipse is seen
2. Penumbra – refers to the lighter
part of the moon’s shadow formed
on the Earth where a partial solar
eclipse is visible
Draw Me! Directions: Using
the figures and words below,
draw and label a total solar
eclipse and a partial solar
eclipse. Then, answer the
given guide questions in
your Science activity
notebook.
Q10. When does a partial solar
eclipse occur?
Q11. When does a total eclipse
happen?
Q12. What part of the Earth’s
moon shadow does a partial
solar eclipse take place?
Q10. When does a partial solar
eclipse occur?
Q11. When does a total eclipse
happen?
Q12. What part of the Earth’s
moon shadow does a partial
solar eclipse take place?
A lunar eclipse is a natural
phenomenon that can only happen
in a full moon phase and could last
for a few hours during nighttime.
Take note that although you get to
experience full moon once a month,
it is rare to observe the Moon in
perfect alignment with the Earth
because of its orbit.
A lunar eclipse only
occurs when the Moon
passes through the
shadow of the Earth
making the Earth
directly in between the
Sun and the Moon.
Two distinct parts of the shadow
created during a lunar eclipse:
A. Eclipse

C. Penumbra
D. Umbra
5. Where on Earth is a total solar
eclipse visible?
