MANDIBULAR NERVE

• Largest mixed branch of trigeminal nerve

• Nerve of 1st branchial arch
• COURSE & RELATIONS
• Begins in middle cranial fossa through
• A)large sensory root – arise from lateral part of trigeminal ganglion
Leaves cranial cavity through foramen ovale
• B)small motor root – lies deep to trigeminal ganglion & sensory root
Passes through foramen ovale & joins sensory root below the foramen
forming main trunk
Main trunk lies in infratemporal fossa, on tensor palati, deep to lateral
pterygoid
After short course, main trunk divide into small anterior trunk
large posterior trunk

MAIN TRUNK
• MENINGEAL BRANCH • NERVE TO MEDIAL
(sensory branch) PTERGYOID
• Enters skull through (motor branch)
foramen spinosum with • Arise close to otic ganglion
middle meningeal artery • Supplies deep surface of
• Supplies duramater of medial pterygoid
middle cranial fossa tensor palatini
tensor tympani muscles
ANTERIOR TRUNK
• 1)BUCCAL NERVE • 2)MASSETERIC NERVE
• Only sensory branch • Arise at upper border of lateral
• Passes between 2 heads of lateral pterygoid in front of TMJ
pterygoid • Passes laterally through
• Supplies mandibular notch with
Skin of cheek masseteric vessels & enters
Mucous membrane related to deep surface of masseter
buccinator • Supplies TMJ
Labial aspect of gums of molar &
premolar teeth

• 3)DEEP TEMPORAL NERVE • 4)NERVE TO LATERAL

• These are 2 nerves – anterior PTERYGOID
& posterior • Enters deep surface of the
• Pass between skull & lateral muscle
pterygoid, enter deep surface of
temporalis
POSTERIOR TRUNK
• AURICULOTEMPORAL NERVE
• Arise by 2 roots which encircle middle meningeal artery & unite to
form sinlge trunk
• Continues between neck of mandible & sphenomandibular ligament
above maxillary artery
• Behind neck it ascends on temple behind superficial temporal vessels
• AURICULAR PART • TEMPORAL PART
• Supplies LOWER • Supplies

Upper parts of pinna -D BY GREAT

External acoustic meatus AURICULAR
• AURICULOTEMPORAL also supplies parotid gland
Tympanic membrane & VAGUS
(secretomotor,sensory) & TMJ
LINGUAL NERVE
It is sensory to anterior 2/3rd of tongue & to floor of mouth
•COURSE
• Begins 1cm below skull
• 2cm below skull, it is joined with chorda tympani nerve at acute angle
• Lies in contact with mandible
•Lies on surface of hyoglossus & genioglossus to reach tongue
•RELATIONS
• Begins 1cm below tongue. Runs between tensor veli palatini & lateral
pterygoid & then between lateral & medial pterygoid.
• About 2cm below skull, it is joined by chorda tympani
• Emerges at lower border of lateral pterygoid & runs between ramus of
mandible & medial pterygoid
• Lies in contact with mandible, medial to 3rd molar between the origins
of superior constrictor & mylohyoid muscles
•Leaves gums & runs over hyoglossus deep to mylohoid & lies on
surface of genioglossus deep to mylohyoid
•Here it winds around submandibular duct & divides into terminal
INFERIOR ALVEOLAR NERVE
• Larger terminal branch of posterior division of mandibular nerve
• Runs lateral to medial pterygoid & sphenomandibular ligament
•Enters mandibular foramen & runs in mandibular canal
•Accompanied by inferior alveolar artery
•BRANCHES
1)MYLOHYOID BRANCH
Contains all motor fibres of posterior division
Arises before inferior alveolar nerve & enters mandibular foramen
Pierces sphenomandibular ligament with mylohyoid artery
Runs in mylohyoid groove, supplies mylohyoid muscle & anterior belly of
digastric
While running in mandibular canal the inferior alveolar nerve gives
branch that supply lower teeth & gums
2)Mental nerve
Emerges at mental foramen
Supplies – skin of chin, skin & mucous membrane of lower lip
Its incisive branch supplies labial aspect of gums of canine & incisor
