CLEANING

AGENTS
Cleaning agents are substances (usually liquids, powders,
sprays, or granules) used to remove dirt, including dust, stains,
bad smells, and clutter on surfaces. Purposes of cleaning agents
include health, beauty, removing offensive odor, and avoiding
the spread of dirt and contaminants to oneself and others. Some
cleaning agents can kill bacteria, on door handles, worktops
and other metallic surfaces,specially in the kitchen
THE UNIVERSAL SOLVENT

Water, the most common cleaning agent, which is a very


powerful polar solvent and is called the Universal solvent for it
is widely used for cleaning dirt and stains.
Disinfectants
For ease and convenience, many homeowners choose to buy cleaning products from the supermarket, and these
products are often very good at what they do. It’s important to follow the instructions on the labels when using
these products, and make sure that you use appropriate products for different surfaces. Here is a list of common
disinfectants:
Disinfectant Sprays: Liquids sprays are very
convenient when it comes to cleaning the kitchen and
the house. These sprays are often multipurpose, and
can be used on a variety of surfaces, from cupboard
handles to cooker tops. Simply spray, leave to soak,
then wipe with a clean cloth.
Bleach: is an excellent disinfectant, and one that can be used in different areas of your kitchen and in the
whole house – like the floor, countertops, or the kitchen sink. It is highly effective at killing kitchen germs,
like those found in raw meats. However, when using bleach, it’s important to make sure that you follow
the directions on the label and work in a well-ventilated space, as bleach is a very powerful substance.
ABRASIVE CLEANERS
Abrasives are substances or chemicals that depend on their rubbing or
scratching action to clean dirt from hard surfaces. They are used to remove very stubborn
stains from various surfaces. example of abrasive cleaners is the dishwashing liquid.
ACID CLEANERS
Acids used as cleaning agents may vary from mild
acid, acetic acid or
strong concentrated hydrochloric acid. Acids should
be used in solutions followed by
thorough rinsing. All, except citric and acetic acid
should be used under supervision with
extreme caution and with the protection of rubber
gloves. Strong acids are poisonous and
corrosive. Examples of acid cleaners are
hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, muriatic acid, and
sodium bisulfate.
DETERGENTS
Detergents may be made from a base of either pure soap or organic
chemicals and is used for antibacterial purposes in the kitchen. Detergents are of two types: soapic detergent and synthetic
detergents
Soapy Detergent: Soapy detergent is made from animal or vegetable
fat and may be
used as a solid block for washing skin and clothes, as flakes for
washing delicate
fabrics or as a powder for washing of soft fabrics. Soap is made by
boiling fat with a
strong alkali. coconut oil provides a soap which is quick to lather
that is excellent at
cleaning.
Synthetic detergent: synthetic detergents is made from organic chemicals derived from
petroleum. These are used extensively in kitchen and in house keeping. They are used for cleaning
task and for washing up the floors. They may be in the form of a powder, liquid, gel
or crystals.
