COMPUTER NETWORK

The Network allows computers to connect and

communicate with different computers via any
medium. LAN, MAN, and WAN are the three
major types of the network designed to operate
over the area they cover.
Differentiate among the 3 Computer network

The main differentiation among

these classifications is their area of
coverage
Computer network
A computer network, also referred to as a data
network, is a series of interconnected nodes
that can transmit, receive and exchange data,
voice and video traffic. Examples of nodes in
a network include servers or modems.
Computer networks commonly help endpoint
users share resources and communicate.
A Local Area Network (LAN) is a group
of computers or other devices
interconnected within a single, limited
area, typically via Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

Examples of Local Area Network (LAN)

Networking in home, office. Networking in

school, laboratory, university campus.
Networking between two computers. Wi-Fi
TYPES OF LAN:
ETHERNET
It is a network protocol that controls how data is transferred over a local area network. In
this type of LAN, the user is able to transfer data at a rate of more than 10 megabits per
second.

TOKEN RING
It is a type of local area network in which all devices are connected in a
ring arrangement. A token is used to avoid collisions of data. It is of 3
bytes and keeps on traveling in the ring of servers or workstations.

Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI)

It is a LAN standard used for data transmission via optical media. Used for
long-distance networks. Uses optical fiber and copper cable It is used in a
large geographical scenario with thousands of end-users.
PERSONAL AREA NETWORK (PAN)

A personal area network is a network concerned

with the exchange of information in the vicinity
of a person. Typically, these systems are wireless
and involve the transmission of data between
devices such as smartphones, personal
computers, tablet computers, etc.
Home Area Network (HAN)

is a network in a user's home where all the laptops,

computers, smartphones, and other smart
appliances and digital devices are connected into a
network. This facilitates communication among the
digital devices within a home which are connected
to the Home network.
A Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

is a computer network that is larger than

a single building local area network
(LAN) but is located in a single
geographic area that is smaller than a
wide area network (WAN). It may also
refer to public use networking
infrastructure in a municipality or
region.
A Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

EXAMPLE:
New York City provides free Wi-Fi access to all residents as a large
single MAN. It also connects traffic lights and parking meters
wirelessly as a metropolitan area network. A telecommunications
provider in London leases fiber connections. Many companies use
these to interconnect, forming a large MAN.
Wide Area Network (WAN)

a computer network in which the computers

connected may be far apart, generally having a
radius of half a mile or more. WANs are often used
by large businesses to connect their office networks;
each office typically has its own local area network,
or LAN, and these LANs connect via a WAN. The
Internet itself is considered a WAN.
Wide Area Network (WAN)

EXAMPLE:

A network of bank cash dispensers; A Company network

with several branch offices geographically distant. A
school network is usually a LAN. LANs are often
connected to WANs, for example, a school network could
be connected to the Internet.
Comparison LAN, WAN, MAN

A WAN will typically cover a larger

area geographically, such as a
continent, a state or a country. A LAN
connects computers within a small and
specific area geographically. A MAN is
confined to a specific town, city or
region. It covers a larger area than a
LAN but a smaller area than a WAN.
