TOPIC INTRODUCTION

Printer
 An external hardware device responsible on taking computer data and generating a hard copy of that data.
 A printer is an output device that prints characters, symbols and graphics on paper.
 Common printer features are printing speed, quality, duty cycle, ink replacement and connectivity.
 Processes data in a FIFO manner.
 The printing speed is usually expressed in pages per minute(ppm).
 Its resolution is always measured in dots per inch(dpi).
TYPES OF PRINTERS

 Impact printers
 Forms characters and graphics on a piece of paper by a striking mechanism
against an ink ribbon that physically contacts the paper.

 Non-impact printers
 Produces texts and graphics on paper without actually striking on a paper.

HIERACHICAL DIAGRAM OF PRINTERS

 It was inverted in 1970’s by Andrew Gabor.

DAISY WHEEL  Is an impact printer which uses individual letters, numbers and
symbol keys to imprint text on paper.

PRINTER DESIGN
 The heart of the system is an interchangeable metal or plastic
“daisy wheel” holding an entire character set as raised character
set.
 In use a “servo motor” rotates the daisy wheel to position the
required character between the hammer and the ribbon.
 The solenoid-operated hammer then fires, driving the character
type onto the ribbon and paper to print the character on the paper.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF
DAISY WHEEL PRINTERS

Advantages Disadvantages
 It is cheap to buy and maintain.  Printing speed is very slow.
 Can create carbon copies.  Cannot print graphics.
 Low maintenance.  It is noisy.
 Low cost.  Produce distortion of paper printing.
 Has better quality  Has a limited number of characters.
DOT-MATRIX
PRINTER
 Is a type of a printer that prints by
direct impact of an ink-soaked cloth
ribbon against a paper.
 Its one of the impact printers because
the printing mechanism involves
mechanical pressure where the pins
with the ink-soaked ribbon hit the
paper.
 The fonts of the printed document are
in dot like form.

LINE
PRINTER  Is an impact printer which makes use of continuous form of paper
which is usually perforated instead of individual cut sheets.
 They print the full width of the page, one line of text at a time, instead
of a print head moving back and forth across the page.
 They can print 1,200 – 6,000 lines.

 Drum line printers  High Speed  Very expensive
 Chain line printers  Character fonts cannot be
changed
 They cannot print
graphics
 Low quality of prints
INK-JET PRINTER
 Is a non-impact printer.
 It is computer peripheral that produces hard copies
by spraying ink onto paper.
 A typical ink-jet printer can produce a resolution of
at least 100 dots per inch(dpi).
 Some ink-jet printers can make full color hard
copies at 600 dpi or more.
PRINTING MECHANISM

 In the printing mechanism, the print head has several tiny nozzles also called jets. As
the paper moves past the print head, the nozzles spray ink from the cartridge onto it,
forming the characters and images.

 An ink-jet printer can produce several hundred pages before replacing the ink
cartridge.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
OF INK-JET PRINTERS

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
 Produces Quality copies  It is slow when printing the copies
 Quietness  Cartridge expense
LASER PRINTER
 Is a type of printer that uses laser beams
and electrostatic charge model (instead
of printing ink onto the paper).
TYPES OF LASER PRINTERS

 Mono-chrome : only prints black and white colors.

 Color-printer : only prints the in cyan, magenta, yellow,
black, e.tc.
 Compact : features a smaller compact design.
 Multi-functional : offers additional functionalities e.g scanning,
faxing and more.
PRINTING MECHANISM

 At first the printer read the electronic data from your computer and beam this
information onto a drum inside the printer which builds up a pattern of static electricity
hence creating a charge.

 This attracts a dry powder called toner onto the paper which is the fused using heated
rollers hence rollers hence this becomes a word on that particular sheet.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
OF LASER PRINTERS

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
 They are fast  Laser printers are too expensive
 Offers accuracy and precision  Toner too expensive
 Low requirement for paper  Toner leaks damages some parts of the printer
and papers too
PLOTTER

 It is a printer that interprets commands from a

computer to make line drawings on a paper with
one or more automated pens.

TOPIC SUMMARY
CONCLUSION

 Overall, this is just a short list of some of different printers that you’ll find available nowadays, both for home use
and for business use. They all work different though, they essentially have the same premises.
 However, all printers have advantages and disadvantages which makes it easier for one to select the appropriate
printer.
 In addition, some of the various factors that must be considered when choosing a printer are:
cost, speed, printing quality and ability to print graphics.
