Green hydrogen: the

energy source of the

future
TABLE OF CONTENTS
1 Introduction
Hydrogen has been a forgotten clean energy source for decades,
particularly since it was first proposed as a renewable energy
source, and associated technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells,
which failed to catch up with other clean energy sources spread
today such as wind and solar energy, contributed to the
marginalization. However, thanks to some recent technological
developments, and research efforts undertaken by prominent
international bodies such as King Abdullah University of Science
and Technology (KAUST), as well as recognizing the importance of
alternative energy sources in government plans to face the
consequences of climate change, the opportunity may be present
today to consider hydrogen as an alternative energy source. more
than ever.
2 Gray hydrogen and green hydrogen
Although hydrogen is considered a clean source of
energy, most methods of producing it today involve the
use of natural gas, which means that the process is not
completely free of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas
emissions. This method is often referred to as gray
hydrogen, and is different from the blue hydrogen
extraction process, in which filters are used to capture
the greenhouse gases emitted from the process.
3 Renewable hydrogen production
Green hydrogen production relies on a process called electrolysis. An electric
current is passed through it to separate the water molecules into hydrogen and
oxygen atoms. When hydrogen is produced this way, the only by-product is water,
yet we can generate clean energy that can be used in industry, transportation,
However, the problem of electrolysis techniques for water today are very
expensive, and require desalinated water of high purity.

the research efforts are not limited to developing the electrolysis process only, but
also include devising other ways to use hydrogen after it is produced and
developing solutions for the hydrogen transfer process, Since hydrogen cannot be
transported easily, one proposed solution is to convert the hydrogen produced into
fuels and chemicals, which can be transported more easily.
Green hydrogen can be converted into carrier molecules such as ammonia,
methanol, and formic acid.
4 Removing carbon emissions from transportation

One of the main and promising uses of green hydrogen is

in clean transportation and transportation. While the
use of electric vehicles contributes a lot to reducing
carbon emissions, electric transportation technology is
not practical enough and is not currently applicable in
some means of transportation such as shipping, heavy
trucks
For example, to achieve the goals of the "European Green Deal",
the transportation sector in the European Union countries needs
to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% to 95% by the year
2050, which is difficult to achieve if not impossible by relying only
on electric technologies, and to bridge
5 Green hydrogen and the future of energy

Governments recognize the importance of developing green hydrogen technology,

and the consequent financing commitments and enactment of regulations and
policies. , for example, the US Department of Energy pledged $100 million over five
years to advance hydrogen and fuel cell technology research and development. The
US government has also indicated that within a decade, green hydrogen should be
available at the same cost as conventional hydrogen.
Green hydrogen also forms an important part of the European Green Deal, which
aims to create a carbon-neutral economy by 2050. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
occupies a leading position in the hydrogen economy
It will take bold steps to remove carbon emissions in many industries, and green
hydrogen can play a major role in this equation, which confirms the need to move
now to make it the most important source. In the clean energy mix and the future
of the world.
