LEAF STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION

2.3 Main Organ for Transpiration

KSSM Biology Form 5

2.0 Leaf structure and function

Learning Standard 2.3.1

 Pupils are able to justify the necessity of

transpiration in plants.

TRANSPIRATI
ON
Transpiration is the loss
of water in the form of
water vapour by
evaporation from surface
of plants into the
atmosphere.

KSSM Biology Form 5

2.3 Main Organ for Transpiration 2.0 Leaf structure and function
The necessity of transpiration in plants

1) The evaporation of water from the mesophyll cells

removes heat from the leaves. This produces a
cooling effect to plants.

2) Helps the supply of water for photosynthesis and

to maintain turgidity of the plant cells.

3) Creates transpiration pull for the transport of

water and minerals ions in the xylem vessels.

4) Transpiration pull helps the absorption of water

by the roots.

 Pupils are able to describe environmental factors that affect

rate of transpiration:
(i) light intensity.
(ii) temperature.
(iii) air movement.
(iv) relative air humidity.

2.3 Main Organ for Transpiration

Light
intensity The rate of transpiration
increases with the increase
in light intensity.
 As light intensity
increases, the stomata
open wider, allowing
At low light intensity, the more water vapour in
rate of transpiration is low. the air spaces to diffuse
out.
 In darkness, the stomata are
closed. Only a small amount
of water vapour diffuses out.

2.3 Main Organ for Transpiration

Temperature
The rate of transpiration
increases when temperature
increases.
 As temperature increases,
the rate of evaporation of
water from the surfaces
of mesophyll cells
increases.
 More water vapour
diffuses out of the leaf
through the stomata.

2.3 Main Organ for Transpiration

Air
The higher the wind speed, the
movement higher the rate of transpiration.
 Wind carries away water
vapour around the stomata.
 The rate of diffusion
increases.

In still air, the rate of transpiration decreases.

 The water vapour that diffused out of the leaf accumulates
around the stomata.
 Reduces the concentration gradient of water vapour between

the air spaces of the leaf and the surrounding air.

2.3 Main Organ for Transpiration

Relative air A relative low humidity in the

humidity surrounding air, the rate of
transpiration increases.
 A higher relative air
humidity decreases the
concentration gradient of
water vapour between the
air space and the
surrounding air.
The rate of transpiration  Less water vapour diffuses
decreases when the out through the stomata.
relative humidity in the
surrounding air increases.
