Direct Variation
Inverse Variation
Joint Variation
Combined Variation
Simple Game!

Translate the following verbal expression to algebraic expression

1) X increased by two divided by three powered by two decreased by five

2) Five plus z powered by two divided by six plus on
3) Two times the sum of x and four minus five
4) Ten minus three powered by two divided by four plus two
5) Eighteen plus four times the number x minus three

VARIATION

QUARTER II
What is combined variation?

 Combined variation describes a situation where a variable depends

on two (or more) other variables, and varies directly with some of
them and varies inversely with others (when the rest of the variables
are held constant). For example, if x varies directly as z and inversely
as y, we have the following combined variation.
Equation: where k is the constant of variations
Example 1!
If x varies directly as y and inversely as z , and x=10 when y=5 and z=3, find the value of z
when x=3 and y=4.

 10
Example 2!
If y varies directly as x and inversely as the square of z , and when x=32 when y=6 and z=4,
find the value of x when z=3 and y=10

ACTIVITY
1) If x varies directly as h and inversely as the square of p, and x=3 when h=4 and when p=2. Find x
when h=6 and p=3
2) If r varies directly as y and inversely as z and x=10 and y=5 when z=3, for what value of z will x=3
and y=4
3) If w varies directly as q and x and inversely as s and w=20 when q=3 and x=5 and when s=10, find
the value of w when q=2 and x=3 and when s=2
4) If p varied directly as a and inversely as y and p=30 when a=10 and s=5 and when y=2 , find p
when a=2 and s=3 and when y=12
