SINGAPORE POLICE FORCE
• FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE POLICE (RSP), THE SPF IS A UNIFORMED
ORGANIZATION. THE MISSION OF THE SPF IS TO PREVENT, DETER AND DETECT CRIME TO ENSURE THE
SAFETY AND SECURITY OF SINGAPORE.[3] IT IS SINGAPORE'S POINT OF CONTACT FOR FOREIGN AGENCIES
SUCH AS INTERPOL AND OTHER INTERNATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES.
• THE SINGAPORE POLICE FORCE (ABBREVIATION: SPF) IS THE NATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY OF
SINGAPORE. IT IS THE CITY-STATE'S LEAD AGENCY AGAINST ORGANIZED CRIME; HUMAN, WEAPON
TRAFFICKING; CYBER CRIME; AND ECONOMIC CRIME THAT GOES ACROSS DOMESTIC AND
INTERNATIONAL BORDERS, BUT CAN BE TASKED TO INVESTIGATE ANY CRIME UNDER THE PURVIEW OF
THE MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS (MHA)

• THE SINGAPORE POLICE FORCE (SPF) IS A UNIFORMED ORGANIZATION UNDER THE PURVIEW OF THE
MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS. THE MISSION OF THE SPF IS TO PREVENT, DETER AND DETECT CRIME TO
ENSURE THE SAFETY AND SECURITY OF SINGAPORE. THIS IS DONE THROUGH ITS FOCUS ON THE 5 BROAD
AREAS OF POLICE WORK - FRONTLINE POLICING, COUNTER AND E-SERVICES, INVESTIGATION,
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND PUBLIC SECURITY & ORDER.

• AFTER GRADUATING FROM TRAINING, YOU MAY BE POSTED TO A NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICE CENTRE AS A
FRONTLINE OFFICER TO GAIN VALUABLE OPERATIONAL EXPERIENCE AND TEAM LEADERSHIP SKILLS. YOU
MAY SUBSEQUENTLY BE POSTED TO OTHER DEPARTMENTS AND UNITS, WHICH INCLUDES FRONTLINE
DUTIES, STAFF WORK, INVESTIGATION OR INTELLIGENCE
• DEPENDING ON YOUR SUITABILITY AND AVAILABLE VACANCIES, YOU MAY ALSO BE POSTED TO
SPECIALIST UNITS SUCH AS THE POLICE COAST GUARD, SECURITY COMMAND AND THE TRAFFIC POLICE.

AIRPORT POLICE DEPARTMENT
• THE AIRPORT POLICE DIVISION (APD) IS THE STATE AUTHORITY RESPONSIBLE FOR AVIATION SECURITY IN
SINGAPORE. APD STRIVES TO MAKE CHANGI AND SELETAR AIRPORTS THE SAFEST AIRPORTS IN THE WORLD. IT
WORKS CLOSELY WITH KEY AVIATION STAKEHOLDERS TO PROTECT OUR AIRPORTS AGAINST TERRORISM AND
ACTS OF UNLAWFUL INTERFERENCE SO AS TO ENSURE A SAFE AND SECURE AIR TRAVEL FOR PASSENGERS.
• AIRPORT POLICE UNITS ARE A SECURITY POLICE AGENCY ASSIGNED TO PERFORM LAW ENFORCEMENT
FUNCTIONS AT AIRPORTS. THEY PROVIDE A WIDE RANGE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDING PATROL, INVESTIGATION, TRAFFIC FLOW MANAGEMENT, AND CONTROL AND
RESPONSE TO AIRPORT EMERGENCIES. AIRPORT POLICE PROVIDE ENHANCED SAFETY TO AIRPORT EMPLOYEES,
AND TO PASSENGERS. OFFICERS CAN BE FOUND AT SECURITY GATES, THROUGHOUT THE TERMINAL AREA, AND
AROUND THE AIRPORT’S PERIMETER.
GURKHA CONTINGENT
• THE GC WAS FORMED TO PROVIDE A "STRONG-ARM" WITHIN THE POLICE FORCE CAPABLE OF QUELLING CIVIL
DISTURBANCE AND CARRYING OUT SPECIALIST SECURITY TASKS. THE MAJORITY OF THE UNIT’S POLICE OFFICERS ARE
GURKHAS RECRUITED FROM A SMALL NUMBER OF HILL TRIBES IN NEPAL. THESE GURKHAS POSSESS THE QUALITIES
BEST SUITED TO SERVICE IN THE CONTINGENT, SPECIFICALLY: PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ROBUSTNESS,
RESOURCEFULNESS AND AN UNCOMPLAINING DEPENDABILITY.
• TODAY, THE GC CARRIES OUT MANY DIVERSE ROLES FOR THE SINGAPORE POLICE FORCE (SPF). THESE ROLES ARE STILL
VERY MUCH RELATED TO THE SECURITY TASKS FOR WHICH GC WAS ORIGINALLY FORMED.
• MISSION TO PROVIDE THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF TACTICAL OPTIONS TO PREVENT, DETER AND DETECT CRIME.
• ROLES/FUNCTIONS
1. THE PTU IS RESPONSIBLE FOR A BROAD RANGE OF PUBLIC ORDER TASKING, FROM DEALING WITH CIVIL
DISTURBANCES TO QUELLING VIOLENT RIOTS. THE UNIT ALSO PERFORMS SECURITY RELATED DUTIES
INCLUDING SEARCHES FOR ARMED CRIMINALS, ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, AND RESPONDS TO TERRORIST
INCIDENTS IN THE FORM OF ARMED STRIKE TEAMS.
2. THE STAR UNIT PROVIDES THE SPF WITH THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF TACTICAL ARMED-RESPONSE CAPABILITY. IT IS AN
ELITE, WELL TRAINED AND EQUIPPED UNIT TO APPREHEND ARMED CRIMINALS AND CONDUCT HOSTAGE RESCUE
OPERATIONS ON LAND AND AT SEA. IT HAS FORMIDABLE FIREPOWER, ALL-TERRAIN MOBILITY AND IS CAPABLE OF
HELICOPTER-BORNE INSERTION. BESIDES DEALING WITH HIGHLY DANGEROUS CRIMINALS, STAR IS ALSO INVOLVED
IN RISKY PROTECTIVE SECURITY OPERATIONS AND PRISONER ESCORTS.
3. THE POLICE K-9 UNIT HAS DOGS TRAINED SPECIFICALLY FOR EXPLOSIVE DETECTION, DRUG DETECTION, GUARD
DUTIES AND ANTI-CRIME OPERATIONS. ITS DOGS ARE ALSO TRAINED TO SUPPORT THE PTU IN PUBLIC ORDER
OPERATIONS. THE UNIT ALSO SUPPORTS THE IMMIGRATION & CHECKPOINTS AUTHORITY, CENTRAL NARCOTICS
BUREAU, CUSTOMS AND SINGAPORE PRISON SERVICE IN THEIR OPERATIONS AT CHECKPOINTS, FERRY TERMINALS,
AIRPORT AND PENAL INSTITUTIONS.
4. THE CNU COMPRISES POLICE OFFICERS AND PSYCHOLOGISTS, WHO ARE ALL SECONDARY APPOINTMENT HOLDERS
IN THE SPF PERFORMING THEIR DUTIES AS NEGOTIATORS OVER AND ABOVE THEIR PRIMARY DUTIES. THERE WILL
ALWAYS BE A CNU TEAM ON STAND-BY AROUND THE CLOCK TO ATTEND TO ANY CRISES THAT MAY REQUIRE THEIR
SPECIALISED NEGOTIATION SKILLS. THEIR MISSION IS TO ACHIEVE PEACEFUL RESOLUTIONS THROUGH
NEGOTIATION.
5. THE SWTT IS A UNIT MADE UP OF WOMEN FROM VARIOUS LAND DIVISIONS AND SPECIALIST DEPARTMENTS
WHO HOLD THEIR SECONDARY APPOINTMENTS CONCURRENTLY WITH THEIR MAIN DUTIES IN THE SPF. THIS
IS A SPECIAL UNIT OF WOMAN OFFICERS TRAINED IN SPECIALISED PUBLIC ORDER SKILLS WHOM THE SPF CAN
DEPLOY WHENEVER THE SITUATION REQUIRES. ONE OF THEIR ROLES IS TO SAFELY EXTRACT WOMEN,
CHILDREN AND THE ELDERLY WHO ARE ASSESSED TO BE IN A VULNERABLE SITUATION IN LARGE SCALE EVENTS,
SHOULD THE CROWD TURN VIOLENT.
6. THE UNPKF WAS SET UP UNDER THE SOC TO PROVIDE SPF WITH THE CAPABILITY TO DEPLOY SPECIALLY
TRAINED OFFICERS TO PERFORM POLICING DUTIES IN OVERSEAS PEACEKEEPING MISSIONS. OFFICERS
HOLDING THESE SECONDARY APPOINTMENTS HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED FOR SEVERAL MISSIONS, INCLUDING TO
IRAQ, ACEH, EAST-TIMOR & CAMBODIA.
TIDBITS OF FACTS:
• AS OF 2019, THE SPF HAS A STRENGTH OF APPROXIMATELY 11,263 PERSONNEL: 9,636 SWORN OFFICERS
AND 1,627 CIVILIAN STAFF.
