What is Narrative Research

Narrative meaning “to tell a story in detail”

Narrative Research described the;

 Lives of individuals/people

 Gathers data through collecting stories

 Reports individual experiences

 Discuss the meaning of individual experiences (Connelly & Clandinin, 1990)


When Do You Use Narrative Research

 When there are individual/people to tell their stories and you, as a

researcher, as a teacher, want to report them.

 When the stories you gathered followed a chronology order

 When you want to collect practice, specific insights, particulars in the

educational field.
When Do You Design Narrative Research

 Dr. Jean Clandinin & Connelly introduced the research design into education field back in 1990.

 The process of narrative fieldnotes, writing and structure of narrative study.

 Some trends that helped spread the use of narrative design include;

 teacher reflection,

 teacher knowledge and,

 teacher voicing their experiences.

Keep the focus on single individual (or two)

Report the life experiences of individual as told through their stories

Re-stories the individual stories and tells the story using chronology with a starting,
middle and end.

Describes in some details the context of the story (i.e., the setting the place where it
occurs, the people involved and, so on)

Reports themes (5 to 7) to emerge out of the story

Closely collaborations with the participant out of the story
