• Decision-making becomes easier with the help of a DSS which uses data, knowledge, communication technologies, and models to assist the decision-makers of a company. TYPES OF DSS 1. Communication-driven DSS - Focusing on the internal aspect of a company, a communication-driven DSS provides a platform for people to meet and/or collaborate. This type of system makes use of the Internet or client/server links such as messaging software and online meeting systems. 2. Data-driven DSS - This type of DSS is used for seeking answers from a given database. 3. Document-driven DSS - This type of DSS is the most common. It is used to search through websites and pages to find documents using keywords. This system uses the Internet and a client/server system. TYPES OF DSS 4. Knowledge-driven DSS - This type of DSS has a broad range of users, from employees of a company and its customers to third-party entities. It is used to spread management instructions or to choose products and/or services. This system uses servers, the Internet, or a PC software. 5. Model-driven DSS - This is a complex system used by staff and managers to analyze and make decisions regarding a business. CHARACTERISTICS OF A DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM 1. Facilitation - A DSS can assist in a company's decision-making process and activities. 2. Interaction - A DSS is devised to support interaction and operations controlled by employees who are part of a decision-makinggroup of a company. 3. Ancillary – A DSS can be used as a guide for decision-making by any employee of a company, but it does not serve as a replacement for decision- makers. 4. Repeated use – A DSS is designed for numerous repeated operations. 5. Identifiable – A DSS can be an independent system that gathers and reproduces information from other systems or subsystems. 6. Task-oriented – A DSS is designed to fulfill various tasks that help in decision-making such as intelligence an analysis, production, implementation of decision, etc. 7. Decision impact – With the help of a DSS, decisions are more accurate. 8. Supports individual and group decision-making – A DSS can provide information access to all users or employees and, at the same time, give them ability to construct own decision. 9. Comprehensive data access – Simultaneous access to data using a DSS is possible using different sources. 10. Easy to develop and deploy – A DSS is designed to manage and store large amounts of data that can be accessed multiple times. 11. Integrated software – A DSS enbales employees and IT professionals to construct data models, analyses, and reports for different purposes. 12. Outputs – These are processed data that generate decision. 4. Decisions – These are the results produced by the system according to the user or employee.
