Biomolecules: Proteins Lipids

The document discusses biomolecules like proteins and lipids. It explains that proteins contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur while lipids contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen but relatively less oxygen. Lipids are found in both plant and animal foods, and can be solid like fats or liquid like oils. They provide energy and insulation. Lipids are made of glycerol and fatty acids. While lipids are essential, too much saturated fat and cholesterol can be harmful. The document also mentions protein deficiency diseases and the structure of amino acids. It provides homework on researching vitamins and deficiency diseases.

BIOMOLECULES

PROTEINS
LIPIDS
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
•To understand roles and function of proteins and lipids.
•To identify chemical nature of biomolecules.

• To identify diseases caused due to lack of certain constituents.

• Recapitulation
• What are carbohydrates?
• What are the different types of sugars?
• List different foods rich source of carbohydrates?
• Why are dietary fibres essential for our body?
FATS
• Fats also contain C, H and O, but relatively less
O. Fats occur in both plant and animal foods.
• Fats – solid at room temperatures.
• Oils - liquid at room temperatures.
• Fats also give us energy. They also provide
insulation in humans and other mammals, and are
energy stores.
CHEMICAL NATURE OF LIPIDS

• The chemicals are the building blocks of lipids of 2

molecules called glycerol and fatty acids.
• Health benefits and harmful effects of lipids
• Lipids are essential part of our diet , too much lipid
is unhealthy, especially a type called saturated fat ,
and lipid compound called cholesterol.
PROTEINS

• Proteins contain C, H and O, and also

some nitrogen (N) and a little sulphur
(S).
• Proteins are found in milk, eggs, meat
and fish.
• Plants have less protein especially
beans, peas and nuts are rich in
proteins than others.
PROTEIN- DEFICIENCY DISEASE

Doctor
recommends 70
g of protein in
daily diet
STRUCTURE OF AMINO ACIDS

QUESTIONING
1.What are lipids?
2.List the substances contain rich sources of lipids.
3.What are glycerol and fatty acids?
4.State effects of lipids on health.
5.Name the protein deficiency disease.
6.  Explain about amino acids.
7.  Write the importance of proteins to our body?
HOMEWORK

• Browse the web list out different vitamins and deficiency diseases. This research
