Background Problems

• According to Joel Ogwang on the new vision 2nd September 2012 analyses that:-

• “Owning a car is a status statement and a key success

benchmark after years of toil. It draws envy and admiration
in varying proposition to many Ugandans. While owning a
car enhance live styles and mobility , it is also a death trap
through accidents, accounting for loss of over 3,000 lives in
Uganda annually, police statistics show” .
Problem statement
• An individual in Uganda loses at least 52 working days every year due to traffic
congestion according to parliamentary report.

• A 2020 research paper dubbed “the cost of congestion in Kampala, Uganda” by

the international Growth Centre (IGC) shows around shs5.7billion or $1.5m-
equivalent to 4.2 percent of the greater Kampala areas daily GDP- is lost to
traffic congestion.

• Time wasted in transit has led to decline in productivity, air population , a

disincentive to investors and chaos on the roads. The increasing amount of time
spent in traffic also reduces time spent with family members (JICA;2010).

• Traffic congestion in Kampala is a public outcry that requires urgent attention.

Aim and Objectives
• Aim
• To analyze factors that aggravate traffic congestion in Kampala city,
Uganda and its potential solutions as a tool for policy making.
• Objectives
1. To examine the road users views on the causes and effects of road
traffic congestion
2. To determine the traffic flow in Kampala city
3. To analyze and propose improvement strategy to traffic congestion
Research questions

1. What are the road users views on the causes and effects of road
traffic congestion within Kampala city?

2. How does traffic volume, speed and time leads to traffic congestion?

3. What could be the possible improvement strategies to traffic

congestion?
Methodology
• Data collection • Sample size and sampling
• Literature review- journals, technique
articles, books, government • 250 respondent from 5 major
reports, dissertations and junctions- Using multistage
presentations sampling procedure
• Road users views • Survey instruments
• Traffic flow survey • Data will be obtained using
Likert-type scale
• Trained Manuel counters
Methodology cont.

• Data analysis • Data exclusion

1. Data will be analyzed using • Newly migrated and Visitors
percentages and relative • Sick and Mentally ill
importance index (RII)
• Using mathematical formular
• Data management
RII= /A*N
• Accuracy, completeness and
2. Spreadsheets (Microsoft excel) impartiality
Methodology cont.

Ethical considerations Next step

Administrative clearance from • Ethical approvals,
Kampala city authority and • Data collection
police
• Report writing.
Informed consent will be sough
from the study participant
All traffic rules will be adhered
to during the course of data
collection
Research findings and results

• Will be based on the questionnaire results from respondents, data

will be analyzed and value of RII is used for ranking all factors.
Limitations
• Time
• Errors in data collection
• Lack of Current data
