    The heart pumps blood into two major circulation loops: 1) the systemic circulation loop which distributes oxygenated blood throughout the body and 2) the pulmonary circulation loop which returns deoxygenated blood from the systemic circulation to the heart and lungs to be re-oxygenated. Blood enters the heart through two large veins, circulates through the heart's chambers, and is pumped into the lungs through the pulmonary arteries to become re-oxygenated before returning to the heart through pulmonary veins and being pumped back out through the aorta to repeat the cycle. The heart uses valves to prevent backflow of blood as it circulates continuously.

    • Blood enters the heart via the two large veins called the inferior
    and superior vena cava.
    • The blood leaves the heart through the pulmonary arteries that
    lead to the lungs.
    • The oxygenated blood returns to the heart via the pulmonary
    veins.
    • The oxygenated blood leaves the heart via aorta.
    • To prevent backflow of the blood, the heart has two valves namely
    the tricuspid valve and the mitral valve. These two valves
    alternately open and close during the pumping of the blood.
