History of T-20 Cricket

The idea of a shortened format of the game at a professional level was discussed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 1998 and 2001. Stuart Robertson, the marketing manager of the ECB, proposed a 20 over per innings game to county chairmen in 2001 and they voted 11-7 in favour of adopting the new format. Twenty20 was the chosen title. The first official Twenty20 matches were played on 13 June 2003 between the English counties in the Twenty20 Cup.

History of T-20 Cricket (contd.)

Every two years an ICC World Twenty20 tournament is to take place. The first tournament was in 2007 in South Africa where India defeated Pakistan in the final. The second tournament was won by Pakistan who beat Sri Lanka by 8 wickets in England on 21st of June, 2009. The next ICC World Twenty20 tournament will be held in West Indies in May 2010.

First Indian T-20 League (ICL)

Indian cricket league (ICL) has been launched by Kapil Dev to promote this newest and fastest version of cricket. The first edition had 6 teams, which expanded to 8 in early 2008 and added one more in the second half of the same year. Each team is be coached by a former international cricketer and will comprise four international, two Indian and eight budding domestic players. There is a US$ 1 million prize for the winning club team

Downfall of ICL
The BCCI refused to recognise the ICL as a cricket league, and criticised Kiran More and Kapil Dev for joining the ICL Faced with the threat of young players joining the ICL, the BCCI jacked up prize money for winners, runners-up and losing semi-finalists across all tournaments. No support from ICC so international players had the risk of losing their registration so they returned to their national teams

Building Up Of A Dream
It was started after altercation between the BCCI and the Indian Cricket League. A T20 competition initiated by the BCCI headquartered in Mumbai. Initially IPL was supervised by BCCI Vice President Lalit Modi but now Chirayu Amin is appointed as chairman & commissioner for IPL . It presently includes 8 teams (franchises) consisting of players from different countries.
