Quality Management System & Certification
When it comes to certifying a company, the most common quality
management frameworks are
ISO 9001 (International Organization for Standardization),
ISO 13485,
IATF 16949 (International Automotive Task Force),
AS9100 (aerospace standard).

All these quality certifications are recognized worldwide.

What is quality audit and quality auditing?

•Quality auditing
It is the systematic, independent, and documented review and
evaluation of an organization’s  to determine whether quality
activities appropriate to achieve the objectives.

•Quality audit
It is typically conducted by an internal or external quality auditor or
audit team at agreed time intervals, ensuring that an organization
has a clearly defined system for quality monitoring.
Common Reasons for Quality Audit Failure
Unsatisfactory documentation:
Documentation is needed for a quality management system
without which compliance audits can easily be failed.

Lack of ISO Understanding:

Lack of understanding ISO agreement and standardization are
a common mistake because many think that ISO grants
companies with certification, but actually independent certification
bodies are there for certifying companies.

Poor Enforcement Strategies:

It is always a good idea to have a clear understanding of
enforcement strategies within your specific industry and determine
a good strategy that properly handles non-conformance within
your company.
Insufficient Competency Testing:
Employee competency testing is missing, this is another essential
aspect of ISO 9001 quality management standard, \

Training should be done each year with a focus on promoting

awareness of quality goals.

Poor Auditor Selection:

Poor auditor selection is another mistake that affects compliance.
If auditors are selected too quickly or not carefully enough, then it
could impact the auditing process.
•Benefits & Necessity for Certification
1. Win more tenders and contracts
2. Increase customer confidence
3. More efficient supply chains
4. Reduce cost of errors
5. Create new opportunities by expanding into new
markets
6. Streamlined process and procedures
7. Motivated staffs
8. Take business to new heights

ISO 9000-2015 5th Edition
ISO 9000:2015 describes the fundamental concepts and principles of
quality management which are universally applicable to the following:
• Organizations seeking sustained success through the implementation of
a quality management system;

• Customers seeking confidence in an organization's ability to consistently

provide products and services meeting the requirements to their
requirements;

• Organizations seeking confidence in their supply chain that their product and
service requirements will be met;

• Organizations and interested parties seeking to improve communication

through a common understanding of the vocabulary used in quality
management;
• Organizations performing consistency assessments against the
requirements of ISO 9000;

• Providers of training, assessment or advice in quality management;

Introduction to TS 16949
It is the globally recognized quality management standard for the
automotive industry.
It brings together standards from across Europe and the US and
provides a framework for achieving best practice with regards to
the design and manufacture of products for the automotive
supply chain

For the first time vehicle assembly plants will be

encouraged to seek ISO/TS 16949 [certification]

If you currently have a certificate to ISO/TS 16949:2009, it will no valid

after 14th September 2018.
Technical Specifications of TS 16949
Technical specification ISO/TS 16949:2009 was prepared
by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF),

The technical specification aimed at the development of a quality

management system which provides for continual improvement,

Emphasizing defect prevention and the reduction of variation and

waste in the automotive industry supply chain and assembly
process.

TS 16949 only addressed measuring equipment,

IATF requirements call for monitoring and measurement activities.

The newer standard also touches on software installed on

employee-owned and customer-owned equipment.
What is difference between ISO and IATF?

ISO 9001 touches on nonconventional and corrective

action.

IATF 16949 focuses on additional issues like

• Problem solving,
• Error proofing and
• Warranty management systems
QS-9000 quality standard?
QS-9000 was a set of quality system requirements developed
specifically for the automotive sector. In 1994, the
requirements were initiated by Ford, General Motors, and
DaimlerChrysler (Big Three) for their suppliers to improve quality,
efficiency, delivery, and communications
QS-9000 and purpose?
The purpose of QS 9000 is to encourage automotive
manufacturers and suppliers to build quality systems that
focus on the continuous improvement of processes and
thereby product quality.
3 section of QS-9000?
QS 9000 is divided into 3 sections:
ISO 9001, including the requirements for the automotive industry.
Other requirements - system requirements defined by the “Big
Three” for their own use. Customer-specific requirements that are
unique to each individual car manufacturers.
QS-9000 responsibilities
•Performing all work in compliance with all documented
procedures and work instructions that may apply;
•To have access to all procedures and/or work instructions that are
applicable to your job;
•To know the company's QS-9000 quality policy statement;
•To cooperate with internal and external auditors;
•To attend and complete all required training sessions;
•To attend all meetings that are applicable to your job function.
(I.E., Management reviews, problem solving meetings);
•Respect the document control and quality record procedures:
•Comply with corrective actions;
•To complete all forms, logs and other records which are called for
by your procedures and work instructions in a consistent, timely
manner;
•To notify appropriate personnel of nonconformances which could
cause a quality problem or finding during an audit.
Integration of ISO 14000 with ISO 9000
The formation of one cohesive management system comes from two stand-alone
systems: quality management systems (ISO 9000) and environmental management
systems (ISO 14000).

The integration of ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 is dependent on two

assumptions.
First,
firms integrating the two stand-alone systems must have in place a
mature quality management system and will employ ISO 14000 to
expand it.
Second,
the quality management system in place conforms to ISO 9001, ISO
9002, or QS-9000 There are two ways of integrating ISO 9000 and ISO
14000.

First, full integration leads to a single system that accommodates all of

the requirements imposed by ISO 14000 and ISO 9000.
The advantage this brings is one system manual in addition to one set of
procedures, one audit that looks at the combined requirements, and
one management review.
Second, partial integration involves keeping separate ISO 9000 and ISO
14000 internal audit processes, registration audits, and surveillance
audits.

By doing this, two system manuals are created: one for ISO 9000 and
one for ISO 14000.

Under the appropriate circumstances, an ISO 14000 system employs

procedures from the ISO 9000 system.
Such procedures may be modified to conform to ISO 14000
requirements; however, this must be done to ensure that the ISO 9000
system is not compromised.

A noteworthy outcome of the partial integration is two sets of

documentation, much of which may be unnecessary
B) Quality Awards:
