DEFINITION OF
TERMS
Set is a well defined collection of objects.

The members of a set is called the elements of

the set.

Set A is a subset of Set B if and only if each

element of A is an element of B. This is
mathematically written as: A⊂B.
DEFINITION OF
TERMS
The union of the two sets A and B is the set whose elements
are the elements of sets A,B, or both. This is mathematically
written as: A∪B.

The intersection of the two sets A and B is the set whose

elements are those that are common to both sets A and B.
This is mathematically written as: A∩B.

Two sets are disjoint if their intersection is empty.

THEORY OF
experiment: PROBABILITY
an activity that is done repeatedly under the same
conditions and can result in an outcome.
sample space:
the set of all possible outcomes of a statistical
experiment and is denoted by S.
event:
a single outcome or group of outcomes
THEORY OF
probability: PROBABILITY
the chance how likely something is to happen.
The probability that an event E will occur is the
ratio of the number of outcomes n(E) of the event
to the number of possible outcomes n(S) of the
sample space.
n(E)
P(E) =
n(S)
THEORY OF
PROBABILITY
Properties of probability
1. A probability is a number between 0 and 1,
inclusive
2. The probability of an event that cannot happen is
0.
3. The probability of an event that must happen is 1.
4. If the probability of an event E is P, then the
probability of the compliment of E is 1-P.
EXAMPLE
Drawing out a single card from a S
standard deck of 52 cards, what is
the probability of drawing:

a) a three of hearts?
b) an ace?
c) a diamond?
d) a face card?
EXAMPLE
S
A die is rolled. Find the probability
that the number turned up is:
a. More than 1
b. An odd number
EXAMPLE
If a coin isStossed three times, find
the probability of:
a. Getting exactly two tails
b. Getting at least two tails
c. Getting no tails
EXAMPLE
S
A coin is tossed 4
times. What is the
probability of getting
at least one tail?
