SAP

What is SAP?

 SAP stands for Systems Applications and Products in Data Processing

 SAP is an ERP software that integrates several business applications.
 SAP was started in 1972 by five former IBM employees in Mannheim,
Germany. SAP AG became the company's official name after the 2005
Annual General Meeting
What is ERP?

ERP is a way to integrate the data and process them into one
single system of an organization

SAP R/3 System Architecture

 SAP R/3 is based on a 3-tier Client-Server model, represented by

the:
 Presentation Server (Layer)
 Application Server (Layer)
 Database Server (Layer)
In a 3-tier Client server model, all the above three servers run on three
different machines
Presentation Server (Layer)

 The Presentation Server or ‘Presentation Layer’ is what is installed on the

typical workstation of a user. This is nothing but the SAPGUI(Graphical
user interface) which when started provides the user with the interface of
SAP R/3 menus.
 This interface accepts the inputs from the user, passes them on to the
Application Server, processes the inputs and sends back the output.
Application Server (Layer) Quality Server

 The Application Server or Layer interprets the ABAP/4 programs,

receiving the inputs from them and providing the processed output
to them. Houses all the business specific logic.
Database Server (Layer )

 The Database Layer consists of an RDBMS (Relational Database

Management System), which accepts the database requests from
the Application Layer, and sends the data back to the Application
Layer, which in turn passes it on to the Presentation Layer.
 Before displaying or storing the data in database server it will follow
the above process and then finally post confirmation from
presentation server, it will store the data in database server.

Benefits of SAP

 The original SAP idea was to provide customers with the ability to interact with a
common corporate database for a comprehensive range of applications.

 SAP maintains a single information system for the enterprise and all the
applications access common data.

 Applications interact with each other when real business events occur. For example,
when events in sales and productions occur, accounting is done automatically. Sales
can see when the production can be delivered, etc., thus the whole SAP system is
designed to work in real time.
