To expose students to the real working environment
To relate theoretical knowledge with applications in the industry
To help the students to develop their soft skills
To develop skills in safety practices, work ethics, communication and

BACKGROUND OF HOST COMPANY
 PETRONAS was founded in May 17, 1974 and it comprised of :
 103 wholly owned subsidiaries
 19 partly owned outfits
 57 associated companies
 Wholly owned by the Government of Malaysia. PETRONAS is entrusted

with the responsibility of developing entire oil and gas resources in
Malaysia
 The company is headquartered at PETRONAS Twin Towers which was

officially opened on August 31, 1998
 PETRONAS Gas Berhad Sdn. Bhd. (PGSB) was established with the kick-
off of the PGU I Pipeline Construction in Kertih on 1981.
 As a wholly-owned subsidiary of PETRONAS, PGSB has been trusted as

the main contractor for the mentioned project and known as PETRONAS
Gas Berhad (PGB).
 Core business of PGB:

 Gas processing and utilities
 Gas transmission

1. COGENERATION (COGEN)
• Power generation plant
using Gas Turbine GE Frame 6
• Steam generation plant
hot gas from combustion in GT is used for heating up demin water
2. Nitrogen Generation Plant

• Product in nitrogen gas or liquid
• NGU 2 produce at higher capacity than NGU 1
3. Demin Water Plant

• Demin water has higher purity
• High, intermediate and low pressure steam produced

• Installed by Daya Bumi Maju after overhauling the pump

• Water leakage occurs at mechanical seal of pump

• Bearing of the pump damage

• Found crack at tapper lock of pulley after overhauling fan by Daya
Bumi Maju.
Causes
• Shaft bend and fabricated back
• Bearing problem with clearance

Cleaning Y-type strainer for Demin Pump
• Y type strainer protects the fluid handling system against the damage that can occur to
valves, pumps and other equipment when foreign matter such as dirt, scale or welding
particles travel through the pipeline.
Problem
• The filter mesh was dirty with foreign mater

Overhaul GTB-88bt-2 blower
• GT-88BT is a one of the turbine compartment. Its functions is to circulate the ventilating
air which leaves the accessory compartment in gas turbine.
Purpose
• Service schedule

Rectify Chemical Injection Pump
• To remove the chemical injection pump for H-6060 at skid A because of diaphragm
ruptured. The pump is used to inject the chemical named H-6060 to deaerator A.
Purpose
• Low rate pumping

GTB Air filter unit replacement
• Air filter unit is used to filter the air enter the gas turbine.
Purpose
• GTB load fluctuation.

Laser Alignment Training
• Alignment is very important to the pump because if the

pump is misalignment, it will effect bearing damage and
seal wear.
• Get knowledge how to do alignment to the pump using
laser alignment
STUDENT PROJECT
ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS FOR GT-88BT
FAILURE AND BELTING SNAPPED
Objective :
1) To investigate and rectify the problem regarding the failure of

GT88BT.
2) To study the GT88BT reliability.
3) To recommend suitable method to avoid the failure of pump
4) To produce the overhaul checklist for GT88BT

2) Written logbook in weekly basis rather than daily basis
